Never played Age of Empires II and heard the HD version was lacking...

Even with the game's flaws, do you think it's still worth picking up? I've been interested in the game/series, and was wondering if there would still be more value in picking up the HD version on Steam over getting the original somehow. The HD edition does still seem to be pretty pricey, for what I've heard is considered an underwhelming upgrade.
Can someone bum me a sig? I'm fresh out.

The HD version is great.

You can get an HD mod for the original, and it retains LAN play.

I've been playing the HD version and it seems to have every feature of the original.

Lan play is missing?

The game had lots of issues on release but they've done a really good job of updating it
