That hardware just isn't going to cut it if they're competing with consoles.

It isn't going to cut it for even basic gaming.
Why start with an i3???? Even a baseline i5 would do better. You need at least quad these days.

I don't know the specifics about the steambox, but an i3 is fine for mid level gaming and by no means in an i5 a necessity.

I personally played Bound by Flame on my current rig and on my boyfriends when he had an i3 and a Radeon 7870. We achieved the same in game visual settings, only difference is my FPS was higher, but both were definitely above 30 fps.

I might sound hypocritical here, considering my sig, but the truth is that if a game is ported adequately you don't even need high end hardware to max it out.

This might change this gen, we can't say for sure, it's too soon to tell, I reckon an i3 will still be perfect for mid range gaming and if the Game/GPU allows it, high.

Even if you take that unoptimized Watch_Dogs - it still ran* great** on my bf's rig.

*Ran because he no longer has an i3.
**Great is a relative term because I even have issues with Watch_Dogs. Supposedly it has a memory leak.

It doesn't even ship with the Steam OS installed.. It's just a Windows PC in a console like case that will be able to run SteamOS just like any other PC.. Not really sure if it qualifies as a SteamBox if the SteamOS isn't even included with it from the get go..

Its not over priced by far. Go spec a similar range Intel Nuc (the i5 one, like the cheaper Brix) with all the parts (including OS) and then tell us which one seems the better deal.

what I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be running linux. if they can get games compatible with it, it should run faster than windows based computers with the same hardware, since Windows is nothing but a memory hog. Seriously, not using windows is like having 4gb of ram be 5.5

$550 for dual core, 4 gb of ancient DDR3,and no Blu Ray. I can only imagine the lol's trying to run Uncharted 4 on that thing. It would probably implode.

Nice try Valve .Stick to peddling 2-D early access 16-bit pre alphas and turning other peoples mods into games.

Valve didn't make it.

Really bad trolling on your part if you don't even know what the hell you are talking about.

It's not even Steam, it's Alienware rushing out to make their own system. With the Steam Machine being delayed, they went with their own unaffiliated machine that ships with a 360 controller instead of the Steam controller that caused the delays. This is all on Alienware.

They want to be first, people will see Alienware Alpha as pioneer of steam machine.
