So how do you feel about the steam box?

Just a term that is being used to describe tiny console-like PC running PC games.

Kinda like people naming products by a brand name, instead of its actual name. Even if it isn't that brand.

It also sounds like Alienware has teamed up with Valve to do this. So, there's that. SteamOS isn't shipping with it (it simply isn't ready), but it may in the future.

One thing that rubs me about this the wrong way is that I"m sure you can't opt out of the Windows installation. One of the draws of this was the fact that you wouldnt have to pay for the windows License. Which doesn't appear to be the case with Alienware.

That doesn't bother me, but I certainly understand that other people will be upset with this. :(

Personally for that price wouldn't you be better off with a PC?

Yes.

One thing I don't understand is the need for hooking up to your tv. Just get a long HDMI and you're all good. Why spend $550 for that?

Try and post that on the 360 board and you'll get an answer.

I like the idea of a PC in a small case with an easy to use menu. However, the performance to price is not good. I will never own one.

Convenience and there are many, many reasons someone can't and/or won't run HDMI cables throughout their home.

I was never going to own one, but I love the idea behind them. I'm gonna get a junk laptop for in home streaming for sure though.

This is true stuff. PC GPUs having HDMI-out is still at the point of rumour to many console gamers.

Or TVs having VGA-in.

The hell? My old 32 flat screen tv lets me hook up my computer to it and I got it about 5+ years ago if I'm not mistaken. All tv's now allow for people to hook their computers up to it. People seriously believe that they don't?
