Let's come up with a better genre name for games like DotA and LoL

They're not strategy games.

What defines a strategy game? You have to use certain setups and tactical approaches in order to win, unless the enemy team is exceedingly terribad.

Same applies to every genre

Breaking news: every game=Strategy RPG

Which leads us to the more interesting question: Why are "strategy" games called strategy games and not just city planning sims?

Probably because not all strategy games concern city planning?

Just a guess.

I see no problem with MOBA.

What really needs a proper genre name is the Diablo-clone. ARPG and Hack and Slash both encompass too many different kinds of games outside of Diablo-clones, and I think there are enough Diablo-clones to warrant classification as its own genre.

Just spitballing here, "LAIRPGs". This term combines four of the defining characteristics of the genre: loot, action, "isometric", and RPG.

Action RTS. Pretty simple.

Considering they're not RTS, at all, that's dumb.

They're not strategy games.

MOBA is fine. There are lots of much much worse genre names. Like JRPGs. They don't have role playing but they get tossed in with RPGs. Or adventure games. Such a generic term for a very defined genre.

Except they spawned from strategy games, and for the most part, you essentially play as respawning hero units trying to take out an enemy base and defences, while your base and their base both spawn low end creeps. The RTS framework is still very much there, it's just far more action orientated.

There's a difference between strategy and tactics.

And having a small amount of strategy doesn't make it a strategy game. Strategy being the basis of the game is.

It just falls into the Dungeon Crawler sub-genre, and the term "dungeon" in Diablo would be used loosely to include the combat areas in both in-door and out-door labyrinthine environments. Diablo would be best defined as an isomeric Dungeon Crawler.

A similar sub-genre that exists further down the rabbit hole is Roguelike (think NetHack, ADOM, DCSS), a pre-cursor to many games in this genre.
