if said batch shortcut also did something malicious, yes.

What did was great a batch short cut to play empire earth 2 on win win 8.1. I followed these instructions.

My Empire Earth 2 is not compatible with Windows 8, please help me!

It worked on Windows 7 then when I upgraded to Windows 8 on all my computers Empire Earth 2 stopped working.

I tried re installing it, I tried running with compatibility modes including admin mode and nothing works. Why is this happening?
Until someone (hopefully Microsoft) comes up with a patch, you will have to run the game with a batch file. Open Notepad and paste the following text:

taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe
Start explorer.exe

Now Save As [All Files] EE2.bat
into your EE2 directory that contains EE2.exe. Right-drag that batch file onto your desktop and create a shortcut. You can right click on the shortcut and choose Properties to change the icon to the one in the EE2 directory (EE2.ico). You can do the same for the expansion (EE2x.exe) if you have it.

You may still need to run the program as an administrator and in compatibility mode, and possibly might need to Take Ownership of the EE2 folder.

You're good.

All that is doing is killing explorer and restarting it.
