Hybrid or reg HDD?

#1MCC1701Posted 6/28/2014 10:20:41 PM
I have a friend who I gave my 750GB HDD when his went bad. He said he'd replace it for me, and even with a drive that was a bit better, since I went to the trouble of swapping them out, reinstalling windows, etc.

Now I'm currently looking at http://pcpartpicker.com/part/hitachi-internal-hard-drive-hua721010kla330

but I am wondering if now would be a good chance to try out a hybrid drive, like this:
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st1000dx001

He's fine with about anything under $100, but if the Hybrid is going to make little to no difference I rather not throw away his money. What do you think?

There isn't much difference. For me, it wouldn't be worth it. All you'll gain is some boot speed, for the most part.

Is that really it? How much boot time are we talking here?

I've had people say they are almost as good as SSDs in many cases, so obviously it isn't just boot time...

Yes it's just boot time and common files. The SSD partitions are only a few GB. All that means is your most common files with that few GB will be in the SSD.

It's a decent speed increase for loading windows and Firefox but your save on skyrim or any game for that matter is still going to be the same speed...and in most cases SSHDs are SLOWER than their 7200 rpm brothers.

Well if it turns a 1-2 minute boot into 30 seconds that would be something, but I assume it is much less than that.(and for Firefox I would assume it is just the startup speed, not browsing, for that).

Well since no one has anything good to say about Hybrids, I guess I'll just get an old reg HDD...

I enjoy the hybrid hdd I've had in a laptop for a few years now. Feels much snappier than a mech hdd, and almost as quick as my ssd based machines.
