Trying to decide between R9 290x and GTX 780

#1DeathSnipe777Posted 7/1/2014 5:19:23 AM
I've finally decided that I'm going to upgrade in the next few months and I've boiled it down to these two, opting for a Like New / Very Good piece of either model to keep the price under $450-ish.

I'm really thinking the R9 290x will give me the best bang for my buck, but after upgrading my AMD CPU to an Intel CPU I have an irrational feeling that the AMD GPU is going to let me down somehow. Am I just being silly? The 290x really looks spectacular and it's at a price I can really get behind.

Which one do you guys think I should get?

What is your reasoning? Is the (from what I've read) marginal increase in performance over the 290x worth the extra money and the Nvidia brand name?

I've had more problems with Nvidia drivers than with AMD

This. If there's one thing I know for sure it's that NVIDIA GPU's are great. Now I'm not saying they're all the best choices because I prefer a couple brands over others like MSI and EVGA.
Oh how is the switch from an AMD CPU to the Intel CPU? Is it drastically different? If it's something a lot different I was thinking of switching to a i7-4790k when Christmas comes around.

The 290X also seems to be around 10% better for most games

AMD GPUs don't have good driver support?

I've definitely gotten a very good increase, though that could just be attributed to age as well. I'd say that an upgrade largely depends on what you currently have now. If your CPU is 5+ years old I think it's time for an upgrade, regardless of whether it's AMD or Intel.

Thank you, this is helpful as well. I'm also looking at the general reliability of each card. Like, build quality and power usage and the like.

Also, for those in the know, is there a certain model of 290x that's better than the others?
