Most people don't really need it. I do use more than 8GB of RAM on a daily basis, though, so I don't mind the extra money I had to pay.

I'd save the money, unless you're planning on running several virtual machines.

8GB is fine, but 16GB is better. When RAM was cheap (8GB for $40), I upgraded to 12GB. It spead things up a bit, but I came from 4GB.

Unless you're editing photos, movies or doing graphic design by the time 16gigs would be something gamers need it will more than likely be time to replace your CPU and motherboard and DDR4 will be out and readily available.

If you're going to get more than 8gigs then get 32gigs and make a large RAM disk at least.
