I regret not buying Skyrim

the game is insane, if you can get into it.

How can anyone other than casuals get into a game, the design of which is so timid, it can't even challenge even the most inexperienced gamer in the first 20 lvls, and won't scale the vast majority of encounters beyond lvl50 (min 20, max 60) for a player lvl 81 cap, and much higher with Legendary?

Oh, mods? You mean like Requiem, Morrowloot, SkyRe and Unleashed? But then, any turd can be modded with enough blood sweat and tears from a community duped into slavering away to polish it. The trick is to not make a turd in the first place, or is the trick to make a turd, market it as a diamond, and sit back laughing while a community of dupes clumsily drape flesh on your skeletal abomination, for free?

Clearly, the best game is just whatever one is hardest to beat.

The fact that nearly every discussion about someone buying Skyrim inevitably comes with notes on which mods to get says a lot about the quality of the vanilla experience.

Fact of the matter is, mods don't matter*. The game can only truly be judged by how it is out of the box, and out of the box Skyrim really isn't that great unless you've literally never played this sort of game before. (which includes an absurd portion of the people who praise it)

As someone whose played ES games since Daggerfall, I found that I was only able to go about 20 hours in before I had to start finding mods to keep me interested. Whereas with the other games I could go upwards of 2000 hours before I even touched mods.

But even if you count mods, mods don't fix whats wrong with Skyrim. They make the good parts better, but everything bad is still bad, if not worse, what with the quality everywhere else going up. Vanilla quests and dungeons in particular, which make up most of the gameplay even with mods, are still terrible and very few have made attempts at making them better, with the most admirable being half-finished.

*The only time mods should be counted is if they completely change how the game is. Like for instance, ARMA 2 isn't that amazing of a game, but with the DayZ mod its incredible.

Very much disagree with you. I started the ES series with Morrowind and that one is my favorite, yes. However, Skyrim is still a fantastic game. I played the hell out of the Vanilla version on my 360 and just recently bought the LE for PC-now with mods it's even better. The core game is still very good tho.

Personally I love the exploration in Skyrim. Despite the naysayers the caves are NOT the same, unlike Oblivion where they pretty much were. In Skyrim the layout, the enemies, etc are different. It's not as good as Morrowind, but it's still a great game to explore.

And the Thieves guild and DB questlines are pretty damn good-altho they WERE better in Oblivion. The MQ is ok, but the expansions add a decent amount and are pretty good.

Overall it's still a great game, even without mods. With them it's very great.

But hey, the game isn't for everyone, as this topic points out. But most people find the game great, even the vanilla versions-why do you think it sold so well on consoles? Because it's a great game even without the mods.

I had fun with it for a while, mostly mod free (though I added some mods to make horses more useful) and while it's not the greatest game ever, I got my money's worth out of it.

Clearly it's not for everyone, but that applies to all games. And oh yeah, if it WAS for everyone, you'd have some angsty teen talking about how that makes it bad because it's not catering to a hardcore niche segment of gamers.

Just because it's not aimed at the hardcore users doesn't mean it's a bad game (unless you define how good a game is by how cool everyone thinks you are for playing it).

Skyrim is decent fun for about 100 hours, maybe longer. I got it for $45 without dawnguard and that house building sim thing they added, and I still got 100+ hours out of it.

Got 175 hours into the Steam version, probably put that or more in the 360 version when it first came out. Great game.

You're better off with Fallout 3 GOTY. Much better game imo.

I like both but the mod quality difference between the two is ridiculous. Fallout 3's mods are worse than the Skyrim mods that came out in the first few weeks before we even had the mod kit released. I wish the Fallout games had as many quality mods as Oblivion and Skyrim, but for what ever reason they don't
