Why are laptops so expensive?

You can get tablets with high end 1080p IPS displays and (relatively) decent specs for around $200. But under $1000 it's hard to get anything worthwhile even though Intel is supposedly subsidizing their parts for OEMs. Even then, it's a crapshoot.

you're paying for the concept of portability. If tablets can support 32gigs ram and can run multiple VMs then i'd make the move, but my work needs me to demo our software and tablets can't run our stuff yet.

The same reason smartphones are so expensive. The more power you hold in a smaller device, the more it's going to cost.

They're more expensive to make.

People are putting them together for you. That costs money. If you could just buy all of the parts and make your own laptop then they'd be cheaper.

its split between the cost of production for laptop parts (which are higher then desktop) and inflation due to convenience.
