In your opinion what has been the best RPG this last decade?

I don't get all the love for New Vegas. It was a bad spaghetti western with robots. Everything was actually a step down from Fallout 3. Setting was worse. Characters were worse. Gameplay was worse. VATS was worse. Everything was basically worse, but everyone here seems to love New Vegas and rip on Fallout 3. I don't understand you people.

It's a very simple thing called "Choice". New Vegas gives you choices in dealing with everything. Want to be the good guy? Do that. Want to be the villain? Join Caesar's legion and enslave everyone. Want to take New Vegas for yourself? You can do just that. These choices extend to every single quest in the game, main or not. And everything you do has consequences.

It might seem like a simple thing, but the fact that almost everyone here prefers New Vegas duo to the choices it offers is a testament to how important choice and consequences are in gaming.

Also, lol at FO3 having better characters than NV.

Do MMORPGs count?

If so WoW

This. And if that doesn't count, it's Dragon Age: Origins.

Wow, so much to consider. As a foreward, my gaming tastes have evolved over years, becoming more casual to compensate for my lack of time to play (read: grind mindlessly). It might be best to do this by category. I'll also use 2004-2013 as the timeframe, instead of 2001-2010, and since 2014 isnt over yet. I also don't play MMOs.

Best Handhled RPG: Fire Emblem: Awakening - I know, it's strategy, but I consider it a tactical RPG for this. Sold my 3DS before Bravely Default came out.

Best JRPG: Shadow Hearts: Covenant

Best WRPG: Bethesda Games - lumped together because they're all essentially the same. Played them all on 360, so no mods, sadly.

Best Casual RPG: Knights of Pen & Paper +1 Edition

Best ARPG: Torchlight

*Worst* RPG: Sacred 2.

Havent tried: Divinity:OS or VM:Bloodlines yet. Judging from this thread, I need to.

Skyrim and Final Fantasy IV DS.

Yes, I'm serious about the second one. Added so much that it's my favorite variation of FF4. FF4 is also my favorite game of all time... so... :P

Dark Souls, bar none.

The game exudes originality and a breath of fresh air, especially considering it's a japanese IP with heavily western influences.
