Question about switching between a monitor and tv - back to back, etc.

Okay, let me try to explain this:

+ I have my computer in my 'home office' attached to my monitor.

+ Every now and then, I feel like sitting on a couch and playing a game instead...when I've wanted to do that, I've had to lug my tower out there along with my monitor because my computer won't pick up the TV automatically until I switch the screens over using my monitor.

Is there a way to make it so my PC will automatically pick up the TV output option without me having to also lug my monitor out there and manually switch output signals?

If your monitor is plugged in via HDMI (which I don't recommend) it should pick it up automatically. The same should hold true as long as they're both using the same connection on the video card, but you won't get sound with DVI.

You could look into a wireless HDMI setup, for around $200, that will allow you to leave your tower in the other room and just switch output to HDMI before you walk into the TV room. Wireless HDMI probably lags though.

Alternatively, you can just get a long HDMI cable. Go to bluejeancables online, where they make quality cables of various lengths for reasonable prices.

When the Steam Boxes come out, you're supposed to be able to connect them to the TV and just stream from your more powerful PC to them, so that would make it easier. But you could also build another PC for the living room.

Finally, if you're happy to continue doing what you're doing now, sans dragging the monitor in there, all you should have to do would be switch the PC's output to HDMI before you carry it in there, then you shouldn't need the monitor.

I would just do the long HDMI cable option.
