Doom is apparently making a come back

Another doom? That's too bad.

Yup

Actually if they can return to what made Doom fun, then I'm all for it. No regenerating health? No pointless reloading and no 2 weapon limit? Sounds like a good start to me. Some of the other stuff sounded kinda iffy, but only because it wasn't in the original games.

All these people grumbling about it sounding bad probably never played the original Doom.

Still, I'll have to wait and see if it turns out to be good. If they can recreate the feel of Doom 1 and 2 with modern day graphics, then it'll be worth buying.

We stil have to know about the level design and such. I haven't seen any wannabe old school FPS go anywhere near the old school level designs.

Yep. An old-school shooter just wouldn't be one with linear level design.

The news all sound good. Too good. I'd like to see this from my own eyes.

This - the original Doom games were so popular/are so enduring for their clever and engaging level design as much as John Carmack's technology. Speed and engaging multiple enemies is all well and good, but if the levels are all linear A-B affairs like most FPS campaigns these days with little room for exploration then it will be little better than every other FPS out there. Also, here's hoping you won't be seeing textures popping in constantly a-la "Rage" as you're running around at breakneck speed.

Doom 3 was a terrible DOOM, regardless of how it was as a game.

Have to agree there, I've played through it+ the expansion, fun survival horror FPS, not such a great "Doom" game.

Last time Id software made anything good was in 1993.

Because Quake, Quake II, Quake III (the aforementioned engines form the backbone of the Source/Gold Source engines btw) sold pitifully and won no recognition whatsoever.

Yep the level design is part of the key, as is the simplicity and visceral nature of the action, the volume of enemies, and the emphasis on mobility and learning enemy patterns. They get all of that right they'll have a good Doom. They don't get it all right... it'll either suck or it'll go into the box with games like Red Faction Guerrilla

Some roads you shouldn't go down because maps used to say there'd be dragons there. Now they don't, but that don't mean the dragons aren't there.

I will say I am encouraged by the tweet from John Romero stating "The new Doom is going to be amazing", as I understand he was in attendance at Quakecon so I imagine he had the opportunity to see the gameplay demo/play the game (plus he has no vested interested in its success/failure as he hasn't been at iD for ages).
