What was the Golden Age of PC Gaming?

1998 was probably the year that blew my mind. Starcraft, half life, baldurs gate, unreal, and rainbow six (among others)? That's the best lineup of new IPs I've seen in a year. 1998 was amazing, with even more awesome stuff in the works like everquest, diablo2, and deus ex.

But I'm pretty happy with modern PC gaming too. I feel like there was a deadzone between like 2002-2006, but since 2008 and steam sales it's been all gravy.

KOTOR and Morrowind are in that "dead zone" and that's just the first two off the top of my head without even thinking about it....

Yeah. I was thoroughly unimpressed with KOTOR and morrowind was one of the last games I enjoyed before that kind of kicked in. I'm not saying there were no good games or anything, just that a ton of those games were rehashed IPs and I wasn't really as impressed like I was in the late 90s or now with a lot of the stuff coming out of the indie boom. There was half life 2, WoW, and a few other big names, but generally just lots and lots of really low quality stuff that felt like bad console ports to me. Steam was absolutely terrible in that era too, as anyone with a 10 year account remembers.

1998:
Fallout 2, Grim Fandango, Half life, Thief, Baldur's Gate
1999:
Alpha Centauri, System Shock 2, Planescape: Torment
2000:
Thief 2, Deus Ex, Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate 2

Fallout 1 came out in 1997, but mostly it was a weak year. Likewise, Clive Barker's Undying and Arcanum came out in 2001, but mostly is was also a comparatively weak year compared to 1997-2000.

1997-2000 is the strongest 3 years in PC gaming, imo.

I'd agree with that. 1997 was Ultima Online too, which was pretty revolutionary and mind-blowing if you were lucky enough to be there for it.

PC gaming is amazing right now.

The first half of this year was PACKED with great PC games.

But it looks even better than it actually is because console gaming is lacking so much. PC gaming is good right now, but not what it was between 1997-2002.

1993 to 2001 Is my PC Golden age.

Also, here's a pretty cool image showing various well known titles on PC from 1990-2010.
