I see this a lot, and it really isn't true in the slightest. It basically boils down to hating what's popular, but that's not what I want to focus on. The thing is, Call of Duty has NOT ruined the gaming industry. Not anywhere close. You know what is ruining the industry? Idiot consumers.
While most of the hate gets attributed to the series, there is nothing inherently wrong with CoD games. They may not be your cup of tea (and they don't have to be!), but (I suppose with the exception of Ghosts) they've always been fluid and polished games. Some campaigns outshine others, but they all are entertaining and engaging for the most part. Certainly a far cry above some of the other offerings of the Multiplayer FPS genre (BF3, Titanfall, etc.). They've featured a variety of extra content (in this sense, I mean not Campaign and not Multiplayer matches) with things like Zombies, Survival, Spec Ops challenges and Extinction, which also serve to spice up the games. Even on consoles, they've maintained standards that other games have lost, especially things like split-screen & locking the games at 60fps. The point I'm trying to make is, while you may not like the games, they are generally well made, polished and smooth, even if there is a bit of recycling from previous games (consistent gameplay is one of the draws of the series).
Where frustration should be directed is at consumers. Over the 7th gen, practically any and every modern FPS game sold fairly well, no matter how shallow and poorly received. Formerly popular and acclaimed series, like Medal of Honor, were forced to go down the Modern route, solely because that's what casuals, i.e. the majority of consumers, wanted to buy. All of the crappy CoD-clones, all of the complete garbage FPS games that came out that most gamers despise are not the fault of CoD, but the fault of all the people who mindlessly buy all these games. If Modern FPS games had not been so popular, another genre would've taken it's spot, and the best-selling series in THAT genre would be lamented as ruining the gaming industry. There will always be a dominant genre (sales-wise), and no matter how good or bad the big names in that genre are, it'll be copied and copied and copied, as long as people will buy it. Instead of hating on CoD, either ignore it or start introducing more casual gamers to different games. Instead of hating on the most popular modern FPS series, just realize that Call of Duty will come and go, and it is not the fault of the CoD developers that all the other trash exists, or for the crappy community.
tl;dr CoD hasn't ruined the industry, dumb consumers have. Instead of just whining about CoD, either ignore it or start trying to introduce these kind of trend gamers to other types of games.
Not aimed at any one person, so don't get offended.
