Do ultra and high graphics even matter?

When I had GTS 250 (until last year) I could play games at max settings for everything if I just turned AA off (and ubersampling for witcher 2).

Yeh, that's BS. My 470 GTX couldn't even max TW2 @ 60FPS w/o ubersampling and it's singnificantly better than a GTS 250.

Why does everyone with a weak system always say "I could max everything"? I've seen it with literally every combination of hardware, and it's always hilarious.

That really depends on the engine/game/screen used. If you're gaming with a standard monitor they are definitely more noticeable, if you play PC games on a TV in most games you'll still see a difference, but obviously with the greater distance it won't have as much of an impact. The most noticeable settings are usually anti-aliasing, render distance, texture resolution, shadow resolution and number of shadows and shader version etc. I usually notch down AA and shadows if I have performance issues in a game as those tend to be the most GPU/CPU intensive settings and I can live with fewer shadows for more fluid display and tighter control.

No idea, it drives me nuts. I mean you can bring down SLI/Crossfire 780/290 pretty easily. I have NO idea how their 760s are maxing games out lol.

To the average PC user, not enthusiast.

Give me a game and ask me what settings I think its at. I would not be able to tell. The difference between ultra and medium isn't that big for most games, I wouldn't notice unless I saw comparisons side by side.

The biggest difference maker I notice is aliasing. Jagged edges always stick out to me.

I've talked to other average pc users, and they say the same thing. Some even think ps2 remasters on the PS3 look better than games like Uncharted because the ps2 remasters like Kingdom Hearts are so smooth compared to aliased ps3 games.

My point is that for the average gamer, AA makes the biggest difference. Yet all I see is console developers pushing textures and details, when casuals only notice edges.

If people think a PS2 game looks better than a modern game due to AA, wow, they're pretty dim bulbs. Don't even know what to say to that one. Sure, they look better than PS2 games without
AA/texture filtering, but come on, lol, there's no comparing

I never see improvement from AA unless I try pushing 4x or 8x supersampling (and all related, like MSAA, FSAA, etc), and that generally cuts your framerate literally in half or a quarter, so it's only for games I overpower so severely that I can basically waste power. In other words, games that aren't going to dazzle anyone anyway. Demanding games will chug under that kind of AA even if you have a beast of a PC, and if you COULD run that you'd be better off with a higher rez monitor (which you could no doubt afford).

Now with a GTX 760 I just let everyting on max. Witcher 3 will most likely be the first game that will make me set AA down again.

At 1280x1024 resolution I'm guessing? My friend had a 275 a few years ago and that struggled with certain games at 1920x1080, so there's no way your 250 was maxing games.

Yeh, that's BS. My 470 GTX couldn't even max TW2 @ 60FPS w/o ubersampling and it's singnificantly better than a GTS 250.

It was running maxed out at 1280x1024 at 24 fps.

I got a chuckle out of thinking a 760 could max TW2 with 60fps and Ubersampling. It is a good card but it isn't doing that.
