Why are gamers always so hostile/divided about nearly everything?

It's like one person says they like cupcakes and the other says they like donuts, instead of saying hey we both like sweets let's exchange other common opinions since we are a minority" it turns into "LOL NOOB CUPCAKES ARE SO MUCH BETTER NOW LETS ARGUE POINTLESSLY TIL ONE OF US STOPS TALKING"

And what I'm saying goes beyond PC vs Console or Microsoft vs Sony or COD vs Halo or anything like that. You never see stuff like this in sports like Baseball vs Basketball (maybe soccer vs football but I think that's due to name conflict more than anything else tbh) or movies or tv shows, hell even genres like horror vs comedy even old ones like Coke vs Pepsi are more jokes than anyone, I've never actually seen anyone turn down one at a restaurant cause they didn't have their preference.

Then there are things that make sense, like Ohio State vs Michigan. It's a big Rivalry, it makes sense it's designed that way. But there is no Sony vs Microsoft 2014 Championship or anything like that, there's NO designed reason for the divide. It puzzles me.

Humans are worthless. We only exist to kill each other.

Who the hell thinks people eating sweets are in a minority? WHAT KIND OF THIRD-WORLD, SWEETLESS COUNTRY DO YOU LIVE IN? RAWR LET'S FIGHT!

lolno.

People don't like others disagreeing with them. My only guess is that gamer's are still wearing underpants that are 5 sizes too small so it makes them a bit extra jaded then the normal population. But it's just a theory.

I mean, wars have literally been fought over disagreements and/or differing opinions.

Young whippersnappers these days and their petty skirmishes. Back in my day we had real holy wars. vi vs emacs, csh vs bourne, and the mother of them all TABS VS SPACES!

Some roads you shouldn't go down because maps used to say there'd be dragons there. Now they don't, but that don't mean the dragons aren't there.

Bourne is a small city (~11K population) not particularly far from me...Now I'm curious where CSH is.

The internet is for pointless arguments.... also for porn.

Everyone has strong opinions but in face to face conversations they're much more likely to be more reserved in expressing those opinions (or risk being awarded a punch to the nose for it). Until they make a device that will let you punch people through the internet, everyone is going to express those strong opinions without fear for repercussion (except moderation, and some people don't even think that far).

Also the people who make stuff actually get richer when there's a rivalry, so the whole console war thing just means that fans of their product will be even more rabidly loyal than they would if there wasn't someone on the other side to hate.

it is far easier to control people when they are compartmentalized, and far more profitable, too.

People want to justify their purchases to themselves. Gaming is expensive and people don't want to admit they bought something less than perfect. Defending a company for this reason might happen even when the poster doesn't realize it.

The internet changed everything. People are inherently dehumanized when they appear as nothing but text on a screen. Respect and civility go out the window...

Probably on the Berkeley campus somewhere. If that fails ask Bill Joy, he should know.
