Why are gamers always so hostile/divided about nearly everything?

They're not. Go look at the poll of the day concerning pc vs console. The site is in agreement.

Proof positive that vocal minorities are the most annoying bunch and don't necessarily pertain to the view of the majority.

I'm rather surprised 2/3rds if the visitors agree both have their or pros and cons, and accept there is no single "right" way to play games.

The time when that poor old Pentium 3 desktop PC was ambushed by five Gamecubes and a Playstation 2, and managed to destroy two of the cowardly 'cubes before his DIMMs were destroyed. That's the sort of heroic inspiration we need to keep on fighting.

It's very important. Jim Sterling regularly gets outraged and indignant about everything. You can't be a true hardcore gamer unless you have the game industry be the most important thing in your life.

That's because many gamers are social rejects that suffer from anxiety and whatnot. They find solace in the safety of their bedroom/basement and the internet through which they can communicate with other people without being ridiculed all the time, something that they experienced as they grew up.

Now when you disagree with someone that treats you as a form of self-acknowledgement, you are practically bringing the real world into that sheltered environment.

This is similar to how some people love their pets in a certain way, because they are solely dependent and almost unconditionally faithful while human beings have the capacity to judge and disregard them.

I think it is unfortunate that people can be so mean-spirited, arrogant, and childish over something as trivial as what type of game system someone prefers.

Immature slang like "PC master race", "sony pony(?)", "console peasants" etc. only adds to such BS.

Can't we just be happy that we are able to play good video games? I'm very happy with my game collection, my consoles, & my PC. I don't want to insult someone over my own gaming preferences.

It's always kind of been that way. I remember as a kid, there was that division between Nintendo and Sega fans. Nerds will cling to something that only they care about and treat it like they're defending their religion.

Yes, you're right. The "console wars", or consoles vs. PCs, is less healthy comptetition and more vitriol & immaturity...
