Ahh more people getting hurt because they saw the words "Car" and "Computer" in the same topic.

Always hilarious.

Do you mean a VIN number? If so, then a VIN number will be assigned to you by the State Patrol if your custom car does not have one already, at least in most US states..

I might be confusing my terms but isn't that open to abuse?
Then you can just steal a car, call it a custom build, and get a new number.

You have to bring along all bills of sale for every major component part you used to build the vehicle, as these will be reviewed.

How do they review it?
Technically a bill of sale can be a simple hand written note with a signature.

And where do the rules come in? Can I register my asphalt racing sled as a road vehicle? It has head lights and tail lights, sure it does a quarter mile in 9 seconds and can barely turn but that's not an issue right?

As long as it has seatbelts, mirrors, and meets emission standards, and passes the other requirements im not sure of, then yes.

Chances are good that it won't meet emissions standards though.

Off the top of my head I'm pretty sure a car is also required to have turn signals, headlights, and a windshield.

No because then they'd realize that you're trying to claim a stolen car and likely arrest you.

And in many states, emissions standards, which can be a beast - especially states like California. Good luck building a car from scratch that'll pass smog. At least with comparable knowledge to what it takes to build a PC...

In California your chances at building an faa (? That's the american airplane regulator guys... Right?) Approved airplane are much higher than building an approved motor vehicle.

Actually... you'd be surprised.

Putting a PC together takes a 10-30 minute youtube video and a phillips screw driver.

Really? you think someone who is totally computer illiterate could just watch ONE 30 min video on youtube and instantly know how to put together an entire build, install the OS properly, and include all the necessary drivers, then set up all the required software?

That's what I did and I didn't even watch a video. Just read the instructions that came with my motherboard/windows. You can learn more in less time by reading. It's really not that hard.

This is one reason I hate YouTube... It's gotten a lot harder to find a well written guide on some stuff that may or may not be obscure knowledge.

Videos you gotta stop, pause, rewind. A well written guide you can read it and retain most of it... at least that's how my mind works.
