Linux installation help

#1DRAGON07891230Posted 7/23/2014 3:05:05 PM
Laptop: rMBP
What I'm trying to install: http://www.backbox.org/downloads (amd64)

So I followed these instructions:
http://www.howtogeek.com/187410/how-to-install-and-dual-boot-linux-on-a-mac/

The partition is set up as instructed, I set 30 GB and left it empty like listed in the link.

I followed these (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx) instructions to create a disk image from the ISO file and the commands executed successfully, when I open the flash drive there's the stuff that seems like it should be there: http://i.imgur.com/Ano7UGh.png

Yet when I shut down, then turn on the power the only option to boot from is the SSD that comes with the laptop (whether through REFind, and yes, I refreshed a few times to check, or through holding down the alt/option button). So what did I do wrong or forget?

(I can't use the LiveCD since there's no disk reader on my laptop)

You're in for a bad time if you can't even install it. Give up.

I would start by seeing if you can boot up off that USB Stick on a different computer, see if the issue is that wasn't done correctly or not. If another system can you can cross that off the list, I would learn towards that being your issue though.

Okay, I pulled out my old (windows) laptop and tried to boot it from there (boot order was USB drive above the Hard Drive), and it spit back 'Operation System not found,' so I assume there was some issue with transferring the image to the flash drive.

Does it matter that when converting the file from ISO to IMG, my laptop (the rMBP) automatically added a .dmg to the end? The extension is [file].img.dmg

Edit: changed the extension to a .img file, formatted the flash drive, and then ran the command again:

Nothing.

Linux is not like Windows or OSX, it's for computer saavy people. If you can't even install it, what are you going to do when you have to open up xorg.conf?

Uh... xorg hasn't had to be manually configured for like half a decade now in most cases.

Some roads you shouldn't go down because maps used to say there'd be dragons there. Now they don't, but that don't mean the dragons aren't there.

And yet about 6 years ago I still had to open it up for some very specific reason.

I'm not all that familiar with Backbox and I never tried to install Linux on a Mac, but why not make your life easier and run it out of a VM instead?
