Another thing to figure out is should I get a IPS @60hz or one of those TN panels with the 144hz ?

At 1080p, get 24" so the image looks better. Especially since you're only two feet from it. ON top of this, 24" is more widely available.

If you're really into competitive gaming (particularly first person shooters) and/or 3D gaming, get a 120Hz or 144Hz monitor.

If you're looking more for better colors and viewing angles, get a 60Hz IPS monitor.

120 Hz is noticeable, but since Unreal Tournament's heyday no games have really been fast enough to take advantage of it.
