Your top 3 Rogue-Likes on PC?

#31Killah PriestPosted 7/26/2014 7:19:35 AM(edited)
I knew once I clicked on this topic someone would be arguing the definition of Rogue-Likes.

Arguing about what is or isn't a rogue-like or a rogue-lite is absolutely pathetic.

This. I could care less about debating what a Roguelike is. All I know is every game everyone has posted is labled as a roguelike. Blame developers for teaching me wrong but I don't really care either way tbh.

A couple of posters just look bitter and pathetic.

Roguelike has been around for 30 years. It's older than everyone here.

A roguelike is a game that takes attributes from the game rogue. It doesn't really have a strict definition. Heck I could just call games like rogue and nethack rpgs and I would be correct.

Anywhoo
Powder
Nethack

Well then post a "real" source with the definition of rogue-like. Who made the definition? Most likely players and not developers.

Thats the thing: SOMEONE, ages ago, created the definition of a Roguelike. Probably the players or maybe a garbage man. Doesn't really matter, if you consider the fact that the definition was CREATED at the time.

The "official definition" is usually considered the one that feels closer to the original idea, in this case, a game like Rogue could be considered the one that coined the term.

Thing is: some developers decided to take this defiition and simplify it. The definition today is so simple that, by definition, games like Hero Siege and Avernum could be considered Roguelikes!

I mean, if YOU decide to create a new and original game, and people create a definition for it, 30 years from now this definition will STILL be the official one, since it was the original.

Dude, it's not a strict definition. IDK why you're arguing about it; it's kinda sad. Despite what you think Rogue Legacy and the other games I mentioned are considered rogue-like.

Definitions can change over time. EX: F** used to mean cigarette, and in some countries it still does; notice how I had to censor it on gamefaqs? That's because it's no longer considered to be a term that refers to cigarettes.

Oh, and you never posted a "real" source.

One of the most interesting mechanics is you can loot enemies for coins but if you do they will respawn randomly on the same map but if you ignore their dead bodies they will remain dead. Also the game has made me jump a few times, some of the enemies scare the hell out of me.

Worth checking out. It's very challenging and there are different spells you can use like invisibility and teleportation.
