Your top 3 Rogue-Likes on PC?

#41arleasPosted 7/26/2014 7:15:37 AM
How about this: if you want to be strict, call it a Rogue-like... and if you don't, call it a Rogue-lite... which is like the same thing but with a different name so that anal retentive people can unclench.

Dungeons of Dredmor
Risk of Rain
FTL

Those are the three that I've spent the most time on.

Spelunky is good but ultimately it didn't hook me in, Rogue Legacy is good but didn't really hook me in either. Binding of Isaac wasn't my favorite either.

Let's go with that.

Also my friend pumped in so many hours to Binding of Isaac, I bought it on sale and I couldn't really get into it either. It's fun but It didn't hook me.

Definitions can change over time.

This is the first thing in your post that I want to quote, because its the main reason why its useless to argue with you. I mean, if you believe definitions change, this means youDO accept that simplifying definitions is acceptable. Based on this logic, one can say that, by definition, Minecraft is a roguelike. :p

Oh, and you never posted a "real" source.

Well, a real source of a term coined after a game made 30+ years ago would be very hard to give. Just go play Rogue to see after WHAT the term was coined. Its not impossible, though. However, since you said you accept that defintions change, why would a souce matter? You would say the definition changed after the years anyways. ^^

Anyway, with changed definitions or not, I still believe a simplistc game like Diablo can't beat complex games like Nethack and TOME, so my list would be the same anyways. Heck, TOME is FREE, so every fan of Roguelikes should play it. ^^

Actually I own Dredmor. I bought it on sale and tried it out. I think I played it for about an hour and haven't touched it since. It's weird but I liked it but I need to put more time into it. I'll check TOME out :)

Why don't you call them what they are?

Spelunky is a damn platformer. Binding of Isaac is a top down shooter. Deal with it.

Does anyone know of an upcoming (if not already out) game similar to these that is about a huge, massive spaceship crashing with 2 survivors? I *think* you control both of them and the goal is to escape from the spaceship?

I may have gotten a couple details wrong. If so, sorry. I saw a video of it within the past few months but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. I don't think it's the developers first game.

I'm asking here because it seemed to be pretty similar to some of these.

if you're gonna be that anally strict about definitions, then mario 64 and all those other 3d platformers aren't platformers cuz they're not 2d and sequential level based, and games like smite and awesomenauts aren't mobas cuz they're not top down and 3 lanes and whatnot, and console strategy games aren't strategy games cuz most of them don't have city building. and all those FPSs aren't FPSs cuz they have reloading and variable cone of fire

genres evolve over time. definitions evolve with them. the spirit of the genre is much more important than arbitrary rigid mechanical rules that arose largely due to technical limitations of the time

anyways...

rogue legacy
sword of the stars the pit
path of exile races

never tried tome, but I think I'll take a look now...

The only one I've really enjoyed was Risk of Rain. My friend and I have recorded and streamed HOURS playing it. Love that game.
