Can someone help me get me controller to work with older PC games?

I've got both an official Dualshock 3 controller and a Rock Candy PS3 controller for when playing console games that were ported to PC. Usually works great, but I can't seem to get it to register with any pre-2006 games regardless of the Better DS3 settings I choose.

I've recently found an old copy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but I can't play it very well because the controls are crap. Luckily the game supports the generic "Game Pad." First thought was to use my Rock Candy controller because most games view it as a generic controller. Didn't work. Then I plugged in the DS3 (with Better DS3) and that didn't work at all either.

Can anyone help me get these controllers to work with the pre-Xbox 360 games, or should I just throw all of them (the games) out now that I don't have and don't want those craptastic generic PC controllers from 2002?

EDIT: I've tried Google, but even when I put "old PC games" in the search, it just keeps sending me to questions about Steam games.

Have you tried something like Xpadder? You can use the Free version with XP compatibility mode... I know you can bind keypresses to controller buttons, so if there's an option to change the controls to WASD or something you could do that at least.

I have not. Up until now, I haven't needed it. Looked for it and only found a paid version (and posts claiming that it doesn't support DS3 unless I run Motionjoy to trick it into thinking I'm using a 360 controller).

The free version of xpadder:

Just make sure to set it to XP compatibility or it won't even install...

as for the DS3 stuff, I have no clue.
