Challenging RPG with a massive open world and engaging combat?

Dont say Skyrim, that game really feels like a game that no matter how hard you try, its either you cant or can beat an enemy, unless you're stocked on healing supplies.

Or Fallout. I've played those.

Dont say a Souls game, I have all of them. I just grow tired of them, I want something new..

The thing Souls games lacked for me was a big, open world to explore. Dungeons and caves, cities, sidequests, massive landscapes, etc. Its open world but it also feels too linear for a true open world feeling.

I've been playing on PS3 for years but recently built a PC. I'm not familiar with many RPGs on here. I dont like level scaled enemies that after a while become easy one hit kills for you, even the enemies that are supposed to be a challenge for you. I'm not too picky with graphics.

Risen 2. Combat isn't the best and animations can be clunky, but overall it's a decent experience.

I can't really think of anything with all 3 of those.

Maybe Darklands? Don't know how engaging you'd find that combat, but it's certainly challenging and open world. It's really old though, '94 I think.

Gothic 1-3

Old but match everything you're after minus engaging combat

Yeah, good luck finding good combat anywhere. Its like nobody can do the basics right.

I feel like its one or the other. Skyrim has a ton of content on it with a huge world to explore, but the combat is so boring. Swords are just block and slash, you dont even need a shield. I made a character that only used a one handed sword and a bow. Didnt even notice the difference with no shield. A bow doesnt even get more damage with headshots...making it feel even more like its a either you can or cant kill the enemy, no matter how hard you try.

Then Souls games had good combat that made you think about what you're doing. But the game feels too linear. Most areas are required to progress in the game.

I think you would love Dragons Dogma...

If only Capcom was smart and ported it to PC : (

How about some of the older RPGs? Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale? Fallout 1&2? Maybe some of those older ones have what you're looking for.
