You don't "try" eve... You have to fully immersed in the world to really get any enjoyment out of eve.
The main draw is that the lore of the game isn't scripted and is based around how the players interacted with one another. Examples being the bloodbath of b-r, the goonswarm, burn jita, and the infamous space emperor the mittani. Every one of these events was caused entirely by player interaction.
Give eve a second chance and try to get in with a good group of guys. If you try to play it like any oother mmo you'll be doing yourself a diservice.

You can try ArcheAge. The Closed Beta Event 2 starts this Wednesday and you can probably still get a beta key if you look around or sign up at the site. It's sandbox/themepark style but I'm enjoying it very much. There's that and Everquest Next Landmark, though the "landmark" version is essentially a voxel-based MMO where you just create buildings and whatnot until the actual "Next" comes out. Those two are being touted as true sandbox.
On the horizon, we have Black Desert and Tree of Savior (the true successor of Ragnarok Online).
