I'm trying to upgrade from Windows 7 to 8...

#1Lord_VaderPosted 7/30/2014 7:37:35 PM
but when I use the software on this page: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

I get an error message saying "The product key you entered is an upgrade key and can't be used to install Windows 8."

What gives?

That thing is asking me to buy Windows 8 when I run it. I've already bought it and have the product key.

Don't you have an install disc?

No. See what had happened was that when I originally made my new build 2 years ago, I bought an install disc of Windows 7 and at that time they were having a promotion where you could upgrade to Windows 8 for only $15. I had to reinstall Windows this week on my computer so I've been able to use the disc to reinstall Windows 7. I don't have a disc for Windows 8 since they never gave me one. When I bought the upgrade to Windows 8 I only got an email which I have since lost. I do still however have the upgrade key to go from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Thing is when I use the Windows 7 to 8 upgrade software that's in the link I posted, it says "The product key you entered is an upgrade key and can't be used to install Windows 8." Which doesn't make sense since the whole point of the software according to the page is to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

Ooh. Talk to MS about it. I have no idea what the problem is, sorry :(

Just wasted an hour talking to someone who could barely speak English only to have her tell me that the upgrade key from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (which I got for $15) was only a one time use thing. What's worse is that they don't even have that promotion anymore so if I want to reinstall Windows 8 I'd have to by a brand new license... ughhh

Sorry about that. Hopefully you'll be able to get Win8 though. Best of luck to you.

Thanks. I actually found a student edition for Windows 8 for $70 which is not bad compared to the regular prices. Is this a good deal: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/productID.264954100?srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=34-222094193-2&WT.mc_id=US_datafeed_Google
