Should I take the time to learn WASD instead of ESDF?

#1Star_NutsPosted 8/3/2014 5:12:15 AM
I'm so used to ESDF but it's annoying to have to change it for every game I play. Trying to learn WASD is so tough for me because ESDF is so natural since it's the default typing position that I use every day all day. What do you guys use?

WASD is easier and all, but if your already used too ESDF and its working for you theres no real reason to change.

How is WASD hard? Most everyone types with their fingers on the home keys of asdf yet have no issues.

When a game says press R to reload, muscle memory kicks in thinking I know where R is, but instead I hit E.

Controls are exclusivley personal preference and you shuoldn't change them unless they give you trouble or are uncomfortable for you.

For example I rarely use spacebar in any game, since my thumb is always in FGCVB area and my keyboard is always titled so I can strech out my left arm.

after a year of typing i stopped leaving my fingers on the home keys with little problem, now i type mostly with just my left hand. spend some time trying to learn the keyboard without relying on the home keys and that should help.

Genuine curiosity, how did you end up on ESDF in the first place? Almost every game I've ever seen has the default movement bound to WASD so unless you change it for each game... idk. Just curious what started you on that path instead of the default one.

Keep what works for you. I use a AEDF, which is very similar but spread out so my pinky and pointer fingers do the strafing. Once you get used to my method, you won't ever go back to the inferior WASD and it's variants. Not only is your hand completely on the home row, but because your hand is spread over 4 keys you have more keys in reach to bind for other things. I bind "S" to open doors or activate item and my ring finger just sits on top of it.

I respect everyone's control scheme, but a HUGE pet peave of mine is games where you can't set any key bindings at all. Like the Starbound developers thinking everyone in the world used WASD and didn't bother to let the user change anything. I'ts probably fixed now but the Starbound ship has sailed for me.

Wow, that is the most uncomfortable way to play games I've seen in months. What the ef, mate. Do you have a pinky that is as long as your middle finger? Seriously, there is huge gap between your fingers. I CANNOT COMPREHEND THIS.
