Viruses don't just "suddenly" appear on a computer, users have to do something (browsing shady sites, torrenting movies/games/music, clicking on links/attachments they shouldn't etc.) to initiate the virus. I would try something like "Stinger" or "Malware Bytes" in safemode, googling the name of the virus, or when all else fails, re-format and start fresh.

Thanks. seems like the solution is working. I don't know where it came from as I don't remember downloading anything other than from steam and some of my lecture slides from the University site.

Ok. I have a question. Seems like it is gone and I have checked registry and all but it could still be detected by malwarebytes under the google preference. The page is not popping up now though even in the internet explorer. Chrome seems to fine now.

Not entirely true. From time to time, Windows exploits are released and those exploits are used to remotely infect computers. If you are running an un-updated copy of Windows you may still be susceptible to these kind of attacks (or if you run Windows XP).

I am running windows 8.1. I made sure windows is updated. I just don't get it why it is like this or why it happened. I have visited the same site for doing my business and all and I never had this problem until now. As I have said I didn't also download stuff as I only download from steam and other retailers such as gamersgate and GOG.
