I think we'll see some performance improvements in DX12 by virtue of the (supposedly) lower CPU overhead, but it will in all likelihood be minimal at best and will be more noticeable on systems where the CPU is the bottleneck a-la AMD's "Mantle".

We should, assuming they don't automatically enable additional effects when using DX12

Aside from the CPU overhead improvements, it should also make porting games from XBOX One to PC a way smoother transition for devs, which should result in better performing ports. That was one of the main points they were trying to get across when they showcased Forza Motorsport 5 running on a DirectX12 enabled PC

It means an old core 2 duo will be good enough to last the next 10 years of gaming.

FACT.

I never really saw a difference between DX9,10, or 11.

I have a DX11 card and I'm sure there are differences but I just can't notice them. Doesn't help that I can't really run tessellation or anything too demanding.

Even if you can't run the DX11 exclusive effects, some games perform better running the DX11 path. Battlefield 3 is said to be up to 30% faster in DX11 than DX10/10.1.

What's cool is that DX12 will support Fermi based cards too. That gen could be granted extra life if optimized well enough.
