I woke up this morning and saw that my laptop had been restarted (it was running the night before). I'm pretty sure no one touched it, as everything is in the exact same position, even the mouse. Looking at event viewer, all it tells me is that the event log service stopped early this morning around 5ish. I checked my Windows update record, and the last time it updated was about two days ago. No errors popped up when I logged in, so I don't think it crashed either.

Is there a way to tell how or why my computer restarted?

Sounds like blue screen or power loss.

I doubt it's power loss though. It's plugged in, and is still fully charged. As for Blue Screen, wouldn't I get like some notification upon logging in though? I'm running Windows 8.1 by the way.

Not always. Sometimes you get the "windows has recovered from a serious error" message but not always.
You can check your crash dump files and see if there is a new one (modified date)

BlueScreenView doesn't show any logs, and the directory it's looking in (C:\Windows\Minidump) doesn't exist either.

You'd have to poke through the Windows Event Viewer. If it's not in there, you'll be hard pressed to figure it out.

Hm, that's odd. Apparently my computer did update according to event viewer, but my update log still says the last updates were installed on the 12th. o_O
