after reading some topics, I'm depressed that I can only afford a R9 280x

As you can see, 290x is ~30% better than 280x or so.
It's about par with a 770 or 7970GHz. Right in that ~680esque pile.

Thank you for proving my point by showcasing aftermarket, overclocked 280x models struggling to outperform the competition, and never leaving their performance bracket.
Even in the most AMD favorable games.

Might just wait a bit and see what the fall lineup brings.

I just ordered a 280x. Reviews seem to be pretty positive about the card. It will be the best card i've ever owned, i'm looking forward to running games very well.

A 280x is a 7970. It'll do good. I've got two crossfired running anything on highest, sometimes I single and still get 30-40~

it's a 7970 ghz edition but more beefed up..it can crossfire with that card but will reduce it's specs to match

With CrossfireX both cards will run at their intended clock and memory speeds.

almost every 280x is overclocked out of the box, and non reference model

The 280X is just fine. I am running a 270 overclocked and run every thing (minus star citizen ) on high to ultra.

Going to upgrade to either a 780ti or Crossfire 2 R9 290's together this fall. Not because I am unhappy with card but want to run games in 1600p and see how good Star Citizen looks on a much higher setting. Right now can only run on Med at 1080p with FPS jumping from 40-60FPS
