Time to rethink beats headphones?

If they cut the price to a third of what they're asking they'd be some of the strongest contenders in the segment. At half price you'd be paying a slight premium for the name. At retail though... yeah, no.

Your problem is you've spent your whole life thinking there are rules. There aren't. We used to be gorillas.

He compared them to headphones that cost the same price.

Everytime I see them in public, I think of that stupid SNL skit with Austin Powers leashed to the playground equipment.

It might be a result of Beats becoming its own entity after they left Monster Cable?

The Monster headphones also got some praise as well after the split. It's a shame their reported build quality is still not even close to acceptable. Either way, they're only going to sound good if you're into the sound signature they present.

pretty-much, but they are very bass heavy, so most people that care about getting the highest quality sound typically look elsewhere, like Audio Technica's ATH M50's, by far the best headphones for the price.

That's pretty funny. The M50s are still bass heavy and have recessed mids. If you wanted a balanced headphone around that price range, the Brainwavz HM5 or NVX XPT100 are a much better choice.

On the topic of the m50s, I've never understood the widespread acclaim of the things. I bought my ex girlfriend a pair because of the hype and found them to be very underwhelming compared to the hype train surrounding them. They also stick way out and look ridiculous and I personally didn't find them comfortable.

Well, it's partly legitimate, mostly newbie cycle. They got popular because they are good quality for $100-120, then people new to good audio bought/heard them and were ZOMG since regardless of preferences they'll be way better than the $5 junk people are used to, so they went around telling everyone the M50s are amazing and those newbies were ZOMG so they went around, etc. I think this is backed up by people perpetuating the BS that they are neutral, monitoring headphones and blindly reccing them without asking for more info, things that people without much experience/knowledge of stuff tend to do. It's like if someone asks what vehicle they should get and everyone shouts COROLLA without asking anything else (and it might turn out that person would be better off with a pickup truck).

Makes sense. They certainly weren't bad by any means, but I was expecting to be blown away with all the hype. Especially with MKBHDs love for them.

Innerfidelity, a very well respected person on Headfi.org, gave a glowing review of the beats solo 2 headphones. Says they are better than the Momentums and V-Modas.

Beats still caters to yolo sweg 15 year old's. I will never take them seriously and will loyally support the companies I deem worthy of my money.

It seems unfair to put down a brand simply because of the brand name itself if the product they make itself is quality which it sounds like it is.

Don't get beats. Just don't. No reason to overpay if you don't have to.
