Linux is the kernel for operating systems.

For example
Ubuntu, Mint, Red Hat, etc. Are "linux based" operating systems. They use the Linux kernel for process, driver, and memory management.

There is also BSD, which is based on Unix. FreeBSD, iOS, OSX, are all based on the BSD kernel.
Linux and BSD are both posix compliant.

Nailed it in one.

And then you went and messed it up. There hasn't been a BSD kernel in the singular since the days when it really was UNIX. All the major BSDs are their own operating systems.

Your problem is you've spent your whole life thinking there are rules. There aren't. We used to be gorillas.

I was generalizing.
Linux gets butchered too. Android for example.
The TC doesn't seem to require the finer points like that.
