It's not a sport it's an e-sport. What is so hard to comprehend about that. It's like asking why they call it the internet..that's just the name it was given. No sense getting upset about it.

It is nothing more than the participants and the organizers trying to give the scene some legitimacy in the eyes of the general public so they can make more money.

How does this bother you at all, though? Like, it's a word.

"an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."

I'm kind of a stickler about our language. I think we need to stick with the definitions of words so we can better communicate to each other. If you were to mention "e-sport" to someone, they'd immediately think of some physically demanding game/competition, only to find out you were talking about playing video games? It's misleading to call chess, poker, or video gaming a "sport" of any kind. It does not fit the definition of "sport". "Athlete" is the same. Calling yourself an athlete because you play video games is complete deception. "So, what do you do?" "I'm an athlete." "Oh yeah!? What sport do you play?" "Video games."

Yeah, I'd like to see the reaction of the person in that conversation.

It's basically another attempt at legitimating the hobby.

The one I don't get is that the fighting game community has a lot of people in it who hate the term, because they don't want to be affiliated with something so corporate...yet Capcom and Netherrealm are sponsoring events and players and it's literally the same damn thing in every regard.
