Push vs Pull - need your opinion

#1rdking96Posted 8/21/2014 4:02:38 AM
Okay, so since installing ram into the 4th ram slot, I can no longer fit the CPU fan on that side (closer to the front of the case).

Because of this, I'm faced with making a choice between a lesser of two evils and I could use your input.

Am I better off:

1. Pushing air onto the CPU from the backside? I've hard push is preferable to pull, however in this case I'm pulling air from the back of the case. Two things wrong with this, it's possible hotter air, and I also have a top and back exhaust fan which may be combating with the CPU fans work.

2.) Pulling air through the CPU fan...I've hard pull isn't as efficient as push however in this case, at least it matches up with the air flow with the rest of my fans/case.

Help?

In general you would want fans in the back and top to expel air while fans in the front suck air in.

I get that but in this case it's a matter of determining whether or not that's the best option since that would require me to pull air through the CPU cooler instead of pushing air through it.

So you think I should go with the pull method?

Are you using CM eve 212 or similar fan? Sometimes when filling the 4th ram slot you can slid the fan over a bit on the heatsink to make room for the ram and it wont effect your temps.

There's not much difference between push or pull in terms of temp. It's easier to clean when pulling air though though. The heat sink pretty much acts as a dust filter, which is then easily cleaned with compressed air.

Thank you! I will probably go this route first and if that doesn't work I will look into the slim profile fan posted.

Yeah, I used this method when I had that heatsink/fan.

Everything I've read says you want positive pressure in the case. That was air gets pushed out all the little holes opposed to air getting sucked in. It helps with keeping the case clean and forcing incoming air to go through filters.

Anyways for the CPU fan moving air inside the case shouldn't greatly effect pressure. I would go with a push as it moves more air.
