Sound Card Worth It?

Sound blaster z worked great when I used it. Now I'm using onboard audio since my mobo has a good enough amp for the headphone. As said before if using optical the sound card is only going to be good for the codecs. I would much rather use the 3.5mm jacks though as you'll get more out of the sound card.

He wouldn't tho, because he's using speakers that have their own DAC/AMP. He needs the sound card for Dolby Digital 5.1 support thru optical.

Sound cards are ONLY worth it if you absolutely must have DSP effects like Dolby Headphone or CMSS 3D.

Otherwise, a USB (or better yet S/PDIF) DAC/AMP will sound worlds better than any card.

The Audio-gd NFB 11 (newer version of the 11.32 that I have) cannot be beaten for its price, and sounds much better than the O2+ODAC that most everyone recommends for entry level.

If you decided to read this whole thread you'd find out that he does need Dolby Digital support because he's using the sound card for speakers not for headphones.
