In shooters, is there any reason for an FOV slider?

What advantage do you get by putting it at minimum? Does it make targets easier to see (rather than higher FOV obviously allowing you to see more targets)? Or make the game run a little better?

I just don't get why so many games have the feature and PC gamers complain when a game has it fixed at a certain point when there is seemingly no drawback to having it at a higher setting.

the fish-eye effect.

The higher your FOV is, the more distorted your view is (simulated 3d is being mapped to your 2d view area), and it makes a lot of people get motion sickness, not to mention it just looks bad.

Low FOV makes it so you can see long distances better.

I prefer my FOV at 83 for games with longer distances, and as high as 100 for games with super close quaters exclusively (such as Quake).

Lower FOV is usually what causes motion sickness for me, not higher FOV.

I also remember hearing somewhere that your FOV will only look "natural" if it's at the same angle that your monitor takes up your field of vision. So if you were really close to your monitor and it was really big, a higher FOV would look less distorted.

Some people get sick from playing a video game at too low or too high an FOV at different distances, so it's imperative that developers include it.

Because when the FOV is fixed, its usually on a lower than the standard PC FOV.

Eh, extremes on both sides are terrible. I find anything under 65 to be completely unplayable (anything under 75 just looks weird), but anything over ~110 looks completely unrealistic and disorienting.
