So we all know the best i5 4690k cooler is the 212 evo...

But I have done some testing as of late with thermal compounds both AS5 and MX-4 as two popular budget thermal pastes. I used the X technique with both and notice a 5-10c lower temperature with the MX-4 on idle. On load with the AS5 I was seeing around 65c oc'd to 4.2ghz (40% fan) but with the MX-4 I was only seeing 60c with the same settings.

This let me to believe that for $10 the MX-4 was a better buy. So anyone int he market for cheap thermal paste the MX-4 is really good stuff. Also noted the MX-4 ias non conductive which means no shorting out the CPU if it gets a little messy. Also no cure time, so you don't need to wait 3 days to stress test your CPU.

Arctic Silver hasn't been relevant in about a decade, I have no idea why people still use it.

Best thermal paste would be Gelid Extreme or one of the others I can't remember.

Also, the hyper 212 EVO isn't the best cooler for anything.

For the price of it, it's the best entry level aftermarket cooling for the i5. I sustain great temperatures with high overclocks right now 55-60c 40% fan OC 4.2 with no voltage adjustments. Most people buy it most people love it.

My dark rock pro 3 is a marvel of German engineering and far superior to an 212 Evo.

The best air cooler is the Phanteks PH-TC14PE, which beat out the Noctua NH-D14 by a couple degrees centigrade (and without looking like poop too!). I haven't seen a roundup with that versus the NH-D15, but I'd still take the Phanteks as it doesn't look awful.

I mostly run custom water these days though.

More so the 212 is hard to beat for the $20 it can usually be had for.

I finally Ran out of Arctic Silver so i finally have an excuse to buy better Thermal paste.

I love the look of my HSF actually and I like that I can do a push pull with 2 fans if I want or mount on eigther side plus it's very easy to use the 212 and its universal. I've had nothing but good things to say about it especially for the price.

and HK7111 definatly try out the MX-4 compound for $10.

212+/Evo is best bang for buck, but far from the best cooler.
MX-4 is probably the best bang for buck paste, not sure if it's outright best.

The one comparison I've seen suggested that the TC14PE is better if using the same fans as the NH-D15 but slightly worse otherwise. Still, I've seen the TC14PE sell for as low as $55 with free shipping while the lowest price I've seen on the NH-D15 was $75 before shipping. If the NH-D15 does offer some small amount of extra performance, I don't believe it to be worth the extra $20 or even $10, and that's before color considerations.

Why is it that he can hit a 3rd baseman on a frozen rope from 300 feet away, but he can't hit a 12 foot tall catcher from 60 feet 6 inches away?

I second the phanteks, keeps my 4.2 ghz 4770k at 27 degrees on idle, and with the thermal paste it shipped with.
