Should i get AMD r9 290x or gtx 980 when it comes out?

I'm using AMD 8 core computer. So I thought I may have better compatibility with r9 290x.

Compatibility won't be an issue regardless. The 980 will almost certainly be the better card, the question is whether it will be worth the price. And we won't know that until it releases.

You can hope for a reasonable price but given nvidias recent track record I would expect it to grossly over priced.

There are no compatibility issues to worry about. There is no affinity between AMD CPUs and video cards, you can use whatever you like with whatever you like.

The 980 is about twice as powerful. The 290X is roughly around the 760 in terms of real-world performance, but costs twice as much.

Dont even get me started on how wrong that is.

Depends on how much the 290x will cost you compaired to the 980.
IF you can grab the 290x for cheap then go for it, otherwise wait for the 980.

not an issue. in fact, you'd get better performance out of an nvidia gtx780 or 780ti with your AMD 8 core cpu. reason is that nvidia has lower cpu overhead right now thanks to a driver improvement a few months back. will not speculate on the gtx980.

Should note that no matter which you are going to get wait for the 980 to release and see how it effects the trickle down prices of other cards.
