Reading low rated bad reviews of amazing nes games pisses me off so much.

I feel the same way about people who complain about an RPG that "the dungeons are too big."

The only dungeons that are too big are the Deadly Towers dungeons. 200-some screens per dungeon+ and it loops on both up/down & left-right axes.

I dunno, Phantasy Star II had dungeons almost too big for its own good as well, despite being an overall good game.

I have to agree with Phantasy Star 2. The 2nd dungeon in the game made me turn it off and never play it again. It just wasn't fun and was too big and confusing as a kid.

I honestly don't find today's graphics "better" than the NES. It's a matter of perspective. I prefer the graphics of Super C over the graphics of Hard Corps: Uprising, for example. It's all about art direction and style. The most powerful console out there can't do **** without geniuses like Miyamoto and the guys at Rare. This is why, to me, DKC's graphics are FAR superior to those in DKC Returns. DKCR looks generic compared to the masterpieces Rare created. DKC still has the best looking caverns I've ever seen in a game. It is beautiful to this day. DKCR looks like a cartoon, just like NSMB Wii.

Some older games are just bad, even then. Some older games are just... old. It doesn't make them 'poor,' just 'old.'

I'm grinding through the first Dragon Warrior game at the moment, just kinda for kicks and giggles. The first half-dozen levels were annoying, but satisfying. I know I'll be grinding more, but I still get a small bit of satisfaction reading that Courage and Wit have served thee well.

This isn't the same A-rank game that it was when it was released (or B-rank considering FF1 and PS1 were around the corner), but it is not a Fail-grade. The interface really drags the game down, but the songs are simple and addictive and it's still pretty impressive visually -- this was before sprites were simply flipped around when about-facing, your hero sprite shows what equipment you don, and fights still had backgrounds!

I find the way the enemies look in combat to still be nice looking. When I first picked this game up as a kid I thought they looked mind blowing.

A strange irony that out of the four NES games, the first game probably looked the most detailed.

Also, it had TWO endings. Wow. I'm tempted to leave the Princess to rot... or bring her to DragonLord as an offering.

I'm raging already and I usually stay calm lol. I also heard a 10 year old punk say "SMB 3 is an awful game....who would play this ... it can't compare to LIttle Big Planet" I had to put my hand in my pocket or else I would have smacked him!
--------------------------------------------------
SHOULD HAVE SMACKED HIM ANYWAY.I WOULDNT HAVE SAID ANYTHING and NO ONE HERE WOULD BLAME YOU FOR DOING SO.

I was born long after Three Stooges, The Twilight Zone, Addams Family, The Munsters, Route 66, The Outer Limits but would give them all very high marks, same with Star Trek (though it veers into B-movie cheesy goodness territory at times), and born after The Rockford Files but would also give it high marks. But I guess those NES downraters would give the Wizard of Oz just 1 star. But sometimes people are older but get so caught up in the more serious present, like Batman fans who HATE the '60s series because they feel it denigrated the franchise.......
------------------------------------------
I AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS.i grew up watching all these shows as a kid in the 80s.i feel the 60s batman is one of the best CLASSIC tv shows out there.the first 2 batman movies with michael keaton as batman are the ones i feel were the best.the other actors who have played batman since i feel are leaving something out of the character.I DONT KNOW WHAT but something.

If you didn't grow up with the NES at the time when it was huge they how can you even come close to the excitement and understanding of what was actually going on back then? You'll never know gaming pre-internet where you had to go buy a gaming mag or figure it out with friends to beat a game. They'll never understand how mind blowing it was to see SMB3 at the end of the Wizard. They don't get why the Legend of Zelda was such a big deal, how before the konami code how hard Contra actually was!

I will never listen to anyone not born in the same generation tell me about my childhood and what games are "good". Sorry, not going to happen. They weren't alive, they weren't in the scene , and I don't care how much they read about it online or "think" they know. It's just not going to happen. This can't be compared to any other media format. Video Games are unique.

Simply put, the NES was awesome in it's day. Everyone had one, it's what you did. It's futile to even argue the point otherwise. It was and still is the benchmark system that saved the gaming industry and brought endless childhood memories to millions of kids.

The only thing worse than people down rating amazing NES games or the NES is when they bring up the "16 bit wars" and still ask "Was Sega or Nintendo better?" You can't even ask that! Nintendo Won! They are still around! Sega just makes games now. The 16 bit hardware wars are long gone and dead.

I don't think I'm going to respond to anyone in particular, but it doesn't bother me too much. It might surprise me, but it doesn't piss me off... if it's a thought out review. I grew up during the NES era, but I find "younger" reviewers have MORE validity today... if it's a thought out review.
When I read a new review of Dragon Warrior, I want to read how even though the battle graphics are so cute & charming, the maps look like crap. I want to hear about the great music, but I want to hear how the game is artificially long from grinding. A review might mention how important the game actually is/was, but I want to hear about it being TOO simplistic & SO menu clunky. A fan-wank nostalgia review is completely inaccurate today. That's my opinion of a game I like. I do! I play through once every 3 years or so; but it's from nostalgia and not because it's a good game.
I READ 2-5 reviews of various opinions when I want to buy a higher-priced older game (for play purposes.) The scores aren't as important as what's being said in the opinion. I want to actually know how the game plays TODAY, not how it plays 25 years ago... if it's a thought out review.
It's my job as a NES players to sort through stupid comments & things that don't matter. Criticizing Contra for not having trophies is a VERY valid complaint from the point of view of a younger trophy hunter. Saying that Zelda is hard to enjoy because it looks blocky and too sparse is VERY valid from someone who grew up on PS2 games. The stuff won't bother me personally, so it matters what else the review says and how it says it.
It's just a matter of perspective. I don't enjoy attacks on games from people that weren't around "back then," but valid criticisms are fine... if it's a thought out review.
Sorry for the long post.
