If you level ANY pokemon up enough they can beat the elite 4.
People have beaten them with caterpie and rattata.

Blastoise is the best starter for soloing due to good moves and typing for ingame and it's obtained early.

Other than that there isn't any particular merit.

Maybe ten years ago I got a beat-up copy of the first one at a yard sale. It's got a sweet 70's style cover. Never read any beyond the first though.
