MacRath's Ruins Entry Blocked

I can't figure how to get MacRath to open the friggin' door to the castle/ruins. I have read the epitaphs on the tombstones but I can't get him to do anything. The screen zooms into a cutscene when I approach and he says something I can't decipher. Has anyone gotten in?
