PLEASE DO NOT POST UNTIL I HAVE FINISHED POSTING. THANK YOU.

This topic was originally written by a-dawg and posted on the RE4 Wii board. With his permission, I am posting it here, making minor edits and alterations where necessary, so that the information is relevant to the PS2 version (hopefully I havenít missed anything =P).

In order to find what you need, look through the table of contents. Then press CTRL+F and enter the number of the question there and press enter twice. You should then go directly to that question. Although with the 100+ questions, you may have to press enter 3 times. =/

This Mini-Guide was intended to help all of the new players to Resident Evil 4, as well as the veteran players who don't feel like constantly answering the same questions over and over again... Believe me, I know how it is.

Enjoy!

A. Pre-game
=========

Q1: What is this game about?
A: I'm feeling a bit lazy, so how about I just include that short Prologue found in the Instruction Booklet?

Several years have passed since the destruction of Raccoon City...
Leon is now facing his ultimate challenge...
A mysterious village...
Creatures that defy nature...
Are they human?
A curse that plagues the human bodyÖ

Basically, the President's daughter, Ashley Graham, has been kidnapped and Leon S. Kennedy is dispatched into Spain for a solo mission to recover her, but things take a turn for the worst when Leon finds there is something terribly wrong with the locals in the area...

Q2: Is this game scary?
A. Er... not quite. But I will say that it has some intense moments.

Q3: Do I need to play the other games in the series to understand the story?
A: Well, as a Resident Evil junkie, I would say absolutely you should play the other games in the series. But to be honest, you don't need to play them in order to understand the story in Resident Evil 4. It's more of a stand-alone title with closer ties to Resident Evil 2 because of a certain character in a red dress. Regardless, if you don't want to play the actual games (but still want to know about the story) read up on this Plot Analysis FAQ written by TWilde / President Evil. It's a very good read:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/925156/2204

Q4: What are the difficulty levels in this game?
A. I'll list them along with my take on each Difficulty Mode:

Easy ~ (PAL and Japanese versions only) Some things are cut out like the Hedge Maze in the Castle and various other areas. I would suggest sticking to Normal to get a complete experience.
Normal ~ Not too hard, not too easy. Plus, this is the complete version as the other mode in the game cut things out.
Professional ~ Beat the game once to unlock. It ramps up the difficulty a bit and provides some more challenges. At least we get something for beating it, eh? (The people who played the GameCube version know what I'm talking about...)

Q5: How long is this game?
A. For a first-timer on Normal difficulty, it will take around 15 - 20 hours or so

Q6: What are the unlockable items/weapons in this game?
A. How about I list them for you:

Complete the Main Game once:
- Alternate Title Screen
- Professional Difficulty ~ Ready to try a harder difficulty after completing Normal? Then this Mode is for you.
- Infinite Rocket Launcher ~ Just like the name says, it fires Infinite Rockets. NOTE: When using it, it doesn't effect your Accuracy Percentage. So fire away!
- Matilda ~ Pistol that fires in 3 rounds bursts. Large capacity, low damage, extreme firing rate. It's a bit of an ammo hog.
- Special Costume 1 ~ Leon gets an RPD uniform and Ashley has a "Pop Star" outfit.
- Separate Ways ~ Mini-Game featuring Ada Wong. It fills in some holes that the Main Game left.
- Assignment Ada ~ Non-Canon Mini-Game featuring Ada Wong. It's there just for fun, and is very short.
- Mercenaries ~ 4 Levels + 5 Characters + Waves of Ganados + Mini-Bosses = Endless Fun.
- Movie Browser ~ Watch cutscenes from the Main Game.

Complete Professional Mode:
- P.R.L. 412 (Plaga Removal Laser) ~ Crazy weapon that acts as infinite flash grenades. A charged shot inflicts MASSIVE DAMAGE on all those poor souls in the direct line of fire. Plagas-Infected Ganados beware!

Complete Separate Ways:
- Special Costume 2 ~ Leon wears a Mafia "Gangster" outfit while Ashley wears an impenetrable Knight costume. The sound of her running almost made me go insane... you'll see what I mean when you unlock it.
- Chicago Typewriter (For use in the Main Game only)
- Ada's Reports in the Movie Browser
#5Mookiethebold(Topic Creator)Posted 8/26/2007 9:25:20 PMmessage detail
Complete Assignment Ada:
- Chicago Typewriter (For use in Separate Ways only)

Mercenaries Unlockables:
- Ada ~ Get a 4 Star Rank on the Village level
- Hunk ~ Get a 4 Star Rank on the Military Base level
- Krauser ~ Get a 4 Star Rank on the Castle level
- Wesker ~ Get a 4 Star Rank on the Waterworld level
- Handcannon ~ Get 5 Star Ranks on every level with every character

F.Y.I. - The Mercenaries Point System is as follows:

1-Star Rank ~ 9,990 Points or less
2-Star Rank ~ 10,000 - 19,990 Points
3-Star Rank ~ 20,000 - 29,990 Points
4-Star Rank ~ 30,000 - 59,990 Points
5-Star Rank ~ 60,000 Points or more

Q7: Does the TMP Shortcut/Ditman/Fence Glitch/etc. work in this version?
A. Alright, to clarify, I'm just going to list some useful glitches and how to do them:

Ditman Glitch ~ Commonly referred to as the Striker Glitch. For those that don't know how to do the actual glitch, here are the steps:

1. Equip the Striker.
2. Hold R1 to aim.
3. Before Leon finishes the aiming animation, go into the Item Menu.
4. Switch to a different weapon.

Once that is done, all of Leon's animations (with a few exceptions) will be 1.5x faster. If you can't get the glitch to work, then check out this YouTube video and emulate it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmXIdFCg5BQ

Keep in mind that there are plenty of things that negate the Ditman Glitch effects. Here is a list of them:

1. Many X-button commands.
2. Aiming with Shotgun/Riot Gun/Striker.
3. Leon covering his face from explosion.
4. Healing.
5. Getting hurt.
6. Cutscene/Radio

Hover Glitch ~ Used in the Merchant Lake Cave after beating Del Lago. It lets you run through the cave walls and into endless space. The same miscellaneous items found in the Village area when using the Fence Glitch can be found here as well. That includes: Herb, TMP ammo, Shotgun ammo, and Mine Thrower ammo. To do the glitch, follow these steps:

NOTE: You'll need to know how to do the Ditman Glitch otherwise this glitch won't work.

1. Turn left, push the crate, turn right, climb up the ladder.
2. Turn around.
3. Activate Ditman Glitch.
4. Jump down the ladder.

You'll then be hovering over the ground and free to walk through the walls.

Fence Glitch ~ Probably the most well known glitch in RE4. The fence in question is the one in the farm area in the Village where you first see the Blue Medallions in the game. For a video of the Fence Glitch, check here:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=aP3IbKl25u0

Unlike the NTSC GC version of RE4, you cannot do the glitch at anytime -- it can only be done at night when you are on your way back through the farm with Ashley in chapter 2-2. To do the glitch:

1. Walk next to the fence and press X (if you didn't make it up the small hill like in the video, try again. It may take a few tries).
2. Explore the area to find some hidden items. Beware that if you pick up the broken shotgun you will be unable to open the attache case without freezing the game. *reset, reload*

TMP Shortcut Glitch ~ There's not really a point in listing it here, because the glitch has been fixed in the PS2 version.

El Gigante Lava Room Glitch ~ This is a glitch where you can skip the entire fight with the two Gigantes in the Lava Room. To do it:

1. Activate the Ditman Glitch.
2. Climb up the ladder leading to the zip line.
3. Use the zip line to get to the other side of the room.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 a few more times until you go through the wall behind the lever in the room.
5. Exit through the door where the Gigantes came from.

Q8: Is Dante/MMX/Mr. T/Rand al'Thor in this game?
A. This was only added for old time's sake. Resident Evil 4 PS2 board. <3

In answer to the actual question, though... No. Although, they'd be killing machines if they were.

B. Basics
==========

Q9: What are the free weapons that can be found throughout the game?
A. I'll go ahead and list them -- there really aren't that many.

1. Shotgun ~ Found in the second story of a house in the Village (You can get it during the actual Village attack or after if you don't want to trigger the appearance of Dr. Salvador to make things easier on yourself). You'll see which house I'm talking about when you get into the town. It's the only two-story house in that particular area.

2. Punisher ~ After you've reached the Farm (still in the Village area), you can start a "Side-Quest" by shooting the hanging blue medallions you see. Seven are located in the Farm and 8 are around the Graveyard near the Church. Shooting 10 of them will give you the gun itself... but shooting all 15 will get you one with a Fire Power upgrade. Just talk to the Merchant again to claim your prize. It's worth it, and not much of a hassle. If you need help looking for the medallions, check your map.

3. Rocket Launcher ~ In 3-3, after the Cage Fight with the Garrador. You'll come to the place where you raise the walkway with the lever, etc. If you go to the left side of the room, there will be a Rocket Launcher inside of a glass case along with ammo. Go ahead and load up and make room for the Rocket Launcher. You'll be needing it in 4-1 when you face off with Salazar's "right hand"... Verdugo.

4. Broken Butterfly ~ Once you've reached 4-1, you'll be reunited with Ashley. From there, backtrack to the area just before the Hedge Maze (near the fountain where 3 crows were sitting) Go to the nearby window and use the 'Piggyback' option when it comes up to have Ashley climb through the opening and unlock the door for you. The free Broken Butterfly is inside, along with some other goodies.

Q10: Are there any extra scenes in the Main Game I can miss?
A. There are a few pretty interesting ones (I may be missing a few -- such as the optional scene in the first Village fight if you trigger Dr. Salvador by going into the two story house, but it's really minor stuff.):

1. Ada...? ~ Once Leon enters the Village Chief's house at the end of 1-2 (There's a pathetic "puzzle" to enter the house -- a glass ball lodged into a door with the cult's insignia on it that you have to roll into the right position), find the Insignia Key and exit the bedroom to make a cutscene play of Leon being attacked by Mendez. Once he lets you go, he'll enter his bedroom and that will signal the end of Chapter 1-2. Once 1-3 begins... go back into the Chief's bedroom. Leon's wanting another beating, I guess. Anyway, someone's watching over Leon (and saves his neck, which won't be the last time)... and she's wearing a red dress. Who could that be?

2. Del Lago Feeds ~ Chapter 1-3. You'll have two small paths to take after coming out of the swamp area with all the Ganados. One turns off slightly to the right, leading directly to a lake along with two small cabins, while the other is slightly more elevated and is straight. If you take the straight path up, a cutscene will play where two Ganados feed a huge creature living in the lake (named Del Lago) one of your buddies from the beginning of the game.

3. Del Lago Feeds... Again ~ Chapter 1-3. Before the first boss-fight with Del Lago, you will have an opportunity to shoot the fish in the lake you come across. If you take 5-6 shots at the lake from the small dock, Del Lago's massive head will pop out of the water suddenly and eat Leon. Quite surprising for the first time you play the game.

4. Cabin Fight ~ During the Cabin "showdown" before the Two Paths, you'll be fighting alongside Luis Sera against what seems like an endless tide of Ganados. If you shoot Luis a certain number of times, Leon will meet an unfortunate (but well deserved) end.

Q11: How old is Leon in RE4?
A. He was 21 in RE2, so 6 years later he would be 27.

Q12: How do I save?
A. Well that's an easy one. At the end of every chapter, it will ask you if you would like to save the game. However, the Typewriters are back from previous RE games but you won't be needing an ink cartridge. Just simply walk up to one and save. If you check your map, you'll see where they are located.

Q13: What's up with the Codec... are they trying to copy Metal Gear?
A. Probably. But anything Metal Gear-ish is good. We need more Metal Gear in this world. @__@

Q14: Can you move when shooting?
A. No, you can't strafe. Use quick-turn if you start to get attacked from behind.

Q15: What are the Gandos suppo--
A. Stop right there. It is not Gando or Granado... The correct word is Ganado. And don't let me catch you saying "Gando" on the board, either. It's annoying.

Q16: Why don't the Ganados use guns? There was a shotgun on the wall and they didn't use it.
A. Well... they seem content with using their pitchforks, etc. So let's not give them any ideas about firearms... >_>

Q17: What are the herbs used for?
A. You can combine them for different effects. The herb combinations are as follows:

Green - Provides a decent health boost when used.
Red - Cannot be used alone.
Yellow - Cannot be used alone.
Green/Green - Provides an even better health boost when used.
Green/Green/Green - Full health.
Green/Red - Full health.
Green/Yellow - Small health recovery + increases your maximum health slightly.
Green/Red/Yellow - Full health + when using this combination it increases your maximum health slightly.
Red/Yellow - Much like The Goggles, They Do Nothing.

Q18: What's the best healing item in the game?
A. As a stand-alone healing item, it would have to be the golden egg. It recovers full health and only takes up one small space in Leon's attache case. Chickens in the Village drop/lay them, so if you're up for "farming" for eggs early in the game go ahead and do so. But, overall, the best healing item in the game is the herb mix of green/red/yellow because it recovers full health and increases the maximum amount of health that Leon and Ashley can have.

Q19: Why do the crows carry money, ammo, and grenades?
A. That's not a very easy question to answer... But it appears that the crows around Pueblo are thieves! So kill every last one of those evil birds you see.

Q20: Are the Treasure Maps worth buying?
A. Yes, you should buy them. It will pay off in the end because it shows you exactly where hidden treasures are (to be sold later). You end up making much more than what it cost to buy the map itself.

Q21: I'm low on ammo, and there are a lot of enemies! What do I do?
A. To conserve ammo, you should use the knife as often as possible. While the game throws ammo at you like crazy (with the ability to upgrade weapons), you still may find yourself scrambling for bullets at times. In that case, use the "knife technique".

When a Ganado/Zealot/Soldier comes near you, swipe them with the knife and that will cause them to recoil. From there, run toward them to either kick or suplex them to the ground. If there are other Ganados around it will have some "splash damage" causing others to get knocked down in the process as well. Get over the fallen Ganado(s) and pull out your knife and go to town on them. It should kill him/her before they are able to get up again... Rinse and repeat.

Q22: What's the best way to deal with Las Plagas?
A. There's no faster way to get rid of Las Plagas (when they explode out of a Ganados' neck) than a flash grenade. Use that to your advantage in the cabin fight in the Village.
#8Mookiethebold(Topic Creator)Posted 8/26/2007 9:30:38 PMmessage detail
Q23: What happens if Ashley gets carried off?
A. Fission Mailed. Go ahead and try again -- and be more careful of Ashley this time, ya hear?

Q24: What does TMP stand for?
A. Tickle Me Plaga. It was Capcom's attempt to leave the video gaming industry behind to get into the plush toy business. I guess the idea failed... =(

Alright, alright. It really just stands for Tactical Machine Pistol. Happy now?

Q25: Who is the Merchant, and how does he get to places so fast?
A. Simple. There is more than one Merchant. In fact, he is a Gypsy that travels with his brothers from town to town in search of out-dated currency. In this case... Pesetas. If you act quickly, you can collect their Gypsy Tears for a special unlockable at the end of the game. SRSLY!

Q26: Did you lie when answering the previous question?
A. Why yes I did. <_<

To be honest, no one really knows much about the Merchant. He's just a guy that loves to buy weapons/jewelry at a HIGH PRICE. And if you didn't know, this is the first time he's made an appearance in a Resident Evil game.

Q27: Does the Merchant sell ammunition?
A. No. Only weapons, upgrades for those weapons, and some items like Treasure Maps and First Aid Sprays. It's also a good idea to sell any spinels, velvet blues, etc. that you find laying around to him.

Although, if you upgrade the ammo capacity of a weapon, the Merchant will max out what you need free of charge. Use that to your advantage if you ever get into a jam with little to no ammunition.

Q28: What happens if I kill the Merchant? >:3
A. =O

If you kill the Weapons Dealer (which only takes one shot or knife swipe) in Easy or Normal... he'll return to the same spot once you exit the area and then enter again. However, if you kill the Weapons Dealer in Professional Mode, he'll be gone from that location forever. DUN DUN DUNNN!!! Serves you right, murderer.

Q29: Where does Leon keep that Attache Case?
A. Who knows. Besides, itís just a video game. It doesnít have to make sense.

Q30: What other Resident Evil games has Krauser been in?
A. NONE. Resident Evil 4 is Krauser's first appearance in the RE series.

Q31: Why aren't there any children in the game?
A. I don't think having Plagas-infected children that are enemies (that can be killed) in a game would provide good P.R. for Capcom, or any other company for that matter. So they left them out. But as a way to describe why they aren't present in the game, just look at it this way -- either the Plagas were too much for a child's body and they died from harboring a growing Plaga, or the other Ganados are cannibals and killed them. Although there is a lot of bloody food on tables, and bodies in the Village. Maybe those are the children...

Q32: What's the point of the dog caught in the bear trap in the beginning?
A. Capcom just included "that dog" as a plug for the Capcom game "Haunting Ground", much like how they lightly promoted Killer7 with the magnum available in the game. That dog's name is Hewie and if you get him out of the trap, he'll help you later on in a fight against the first El Gigante.

Q33: So I was shooting the boxes on the tables and...
A. NO. Use the knife to bust open crates, boxes, etc... it's a total waste of ammo to shoot them!

Q34: I'm having trouble at the first Village near the beginning of the game. Any tips?
A. This part can be tough for a player who is new to RE4.

Well, for starters... don't enter the two story house or go down the small path near the two story house unless you'd like to face-off with Dr. Salvador. Instead, climb the tower and constantly drop down and climb it again until the time is up... or for a "less cheap" way, enter the house directly across from the two story building and shoot a hole in the bottom of the wooden door. With that, you can then see the enemies coming and know when to aim low and slash them with the Knife. After a certain number of enemies are dead (or a certain amount of time passes), a cutscene will play.

However, if you'd like to hold up in the two story house make use of the bookshelves/dressers. They can be moved in front of windows/doors to keep the Ganados out of the house for a bit longer. During that time, run upstairs and grab the shotgun on the wall. Because Dr. Salvador will be on the loose, you may want to save those shells for him... but it also works great for groups. Feel free to lob a grenade at a cluster of them as well to take out as many as possible. Once you kill enough enemies, the cutscene will play.

Q35: Can the cows die?
A. Yes, they can. Be careful though, they are feisty.

Q36: Can you die by getting your leg caught in the bear traps?
A. No, you can't. But your health can go to zero if you constantly run into them. My advice would be to check the ground often for traps.

Q37: Is the scared dog in the farm area the same dog I saved from the bear trap earlier?
A. No, it isn't.

Q38: Why can't I suplex this Ganado? I can do it just fine on the Zealots and Soldiers...
A. You can only suplex Zealots in the Castle and Soldiers on the Island. It can't be done to the Ganados of the Village.

Q39: What happened to Leon's jacket?
A. A Ganado stole it. In fact, you'll get the opportunity to kill the culprit in Separate Ways with Ada.

Q40: What's with the fish before the Cemetery?
A. If you have the patience, you can shoot and sell them to the Merchant. It's not really worth it to keep them for healing "items" because they take up space, but that's also an option if you choose to do so.

Q41: I can't figure out this puzzle behind the church. What's the solution?
A. Rotate the dial in this order: 3-3-3-4-4-4-3.

Q42: I keep hitting the trees floating in the lake during the boss fight with Del Lago. Any advice?
A. Yeah, sure. Simply use the analog stick to move the boat in the direction you need to go in order to dodge the trees.

Q43: El Gigante is giving me some problems, and I need some words of advice. Have any for me?
A. Use a high powered weapon (maybe the Bolt Action Rifle if you are quick) and shoot him in the face. Once he falls to the ground, his Plagas will sprout from his massive back. Approach El Gigante and climb up to slash the knife at his weak spot. Do this 2-3 more times and he'll go down in a heap. Be aware that a dodge command will come up if you are in range of being fallen on.

If you saved the dog in the bear trap near the beginning of the game, it will make this fight somewhat easier since Hewie (the dog making a cameo from Haunting Ground) will distract El Gigante letting you get some free shots on the beast.

Q44: How do I get across on the chandelier in the Church?!
A. You've got to be kidding me. No? You're not? Okay then... as soon as you jump onto the chandelier, tap the Action button immediately and Leon will get across with ease.

Q45: I can't figure out the Red, Green, Blue puzzle inside of the Church. What do I do?
A. If you'll notice the Los Illuminados symbol is clear, so it's really an easy "puzzle." But if you are still having problems, here's how many times you need to turn each one:

Red - 2
Green- 3
Blue - 1

Q46: How old is Ashley?
A. 20 years old. Why do you care, though? Did you upskirt her and then feel bad about it? Shame on you!

Q47: Wait.
A. Follow me. You'll be using that command quite a bit throughout the game, so get used to it.

Q48: The Cabin is really hard. What do I have to do to beat this part?
A. Don't get frustrated. It may take a couple of tries to get it down...

First of all, close up the windows with the bookshelves (probably on just two so that you can still pick off Ganados trying to get in through the open window) and help Luis out if he gets overwhelmed and grabbed. If Las Plagas appears (and they will...) just use a Flash Grenade to take them out with ease. Otherwise your ammo will suffer and it'll just make this part of the game harder for you. A good place to make a stand is the staircase itself, that way you can bottleneck the enemies and take them out one by one or blast them with the Shotgun for massive damage.

In the second phase of the Cabin Fight, the bottom floor will be completely overrun and Ganados will climb ladders and start pouring in through the windows of the second floor. Quickly go upstairs and continually knock the ladders down or else you'll have a whole mess of Ganados in the room to deal with. Keep the Ganados off of Luis and be careful not to shoot him too many times. Accidents happen, right? So it's okay if you hit him a couple of times in the heat of the battle. Eventually a cutscene will play, which signals the end of the hectic fight.

Q49: Which path should I take... left or right?
A. Both. That is, if you want the treasures offered on the left and right paths. Once you beat one path, backtrack to the area with the lever to try the remaining path.

The left path is the harder of the two (make sure to tell Ashley to hide in a nearby dumpster or else she'll get in the way and cause problems), but it's not too rough. It has a lot of Ganados along with a new enemy (or should I say enemies?) -- the Bella Sisters. These ladies aren't anything to mess with as they work together in an attempt to take Leon's head clean off with their chainsaws. And the worst part of it is, you'll be in a "pit" with them when they first appear. Before you jump into the "pit", make sure not to knock down the closest ladder to you. You'll need it to get back up to make things easier. That way, you can kill the surrounding Ganados on the higher level with you while keeping an eye on the Sisters and shooting them anytime they begin to climb up a ladder. But don't worry if they get up to your level. Just blast them with the Shotgun to knock them down. From there on out, the left path should be simple.

The right path is another El Gigante. But because you have Ashley this time, things are made a bit trickier. Shoot the boulder above at the right time as El Gigante comes toward you and it should bring him down so that you can work on his Plaga sprouting from his back with the Knife. I suggest using the TMP for this boss fight, but anything works. Just make sure to keep an eye on Ashley's health. Get the Old Key from a small shack and you'll be able to exit the area.

Q50: I can't beat Mendez... Help?
A. There is a glitch that should make the boss fight considerably easier.
