I've bought my first ever nintendo concole (3ds), what are the best DS rpgs/strategy games out there?

I already have FF3/4 on my wishlist

Thanks

Chrono Trigger
Dark Spire
Dragon Quest #5 & #9. (#4 & #6 can be purchased much later)
Black Sigil

My personal favorite is FF4, I'm glad it's on your list already. I would be content if the only games I owned for the DS were Dark Spire, Chrono Trigger, and FF4.

Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled (Old School RPG)
Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow (ARPG, excellent customization)
Chrono Trigger (Old School RPG, one of the best RPGs EVER)
Contact (very cool, plays like an MMORPG but it isen't)
Custom Robo Arena (tiny fighting robots, VERY COOL)
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (RPG, MASSIVE post game)
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 (great alternative to Pokemon)
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (Classic Old School RPG)
Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain (1st Person ARPG)
Front Mission (SRPG, very good)
Infinite Space (My fav DS game, a massive JRPG/visual novel/sapce SIM)
Mega Man Star Force 3: Black Ace / Red Joker (ARPGs)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky (excellent rogue RPG)
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (outstanding puzzle RPG)
Radiant Historia (RPG very well done)
Rondo of Swords (hardest SRPG on the DS, this game actually is a challenge)
Rune Factory 3: A Fantasy Harvest Moon (ARPG/Harvest Moon)
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (SRPG, great story)
The World Ends With You (very innovative ARPG)

That should cover the basics for RPGs with a few from each sub-genre

Why can't we elaborate as to why said games are quality? We aren't helping the original poster.

Oh, RPGs or strategy. Thought you meant strategy-RPG. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is the most fun I've had with a DS game, it's an RPG with button-timing battles.

There's also Ghost Recon on the 3DS - it's like Fire Emblem with guns.

I think it's a matter of personal preference, but they are cut from the same swath. I found Dark Spire to be a little harder, personally. Dark Spire automaps everything for you, while self-mapping is necessary for EO. EO is also cleaner (looking and playing) than Dark Spire, but Dark Spire is supposed to be a throwback to the old Oblivion Games, and it has a much older feel to it. I played my first computer game in the late 70's, so I always liked Dark Spire a little more, it seemed like playing a game from that era (before all the bells and whistles were a standard part of games). What Dark Spire will give you is many hours of frustration and satisfaction. The game doesn't hold your hand, and to complete the entire game (there is no post game content) without the aid of any walkthroughs is a major accomplishment. What EO gives you is more polish, a few more whistles, a very similar (but not as tough) game progression, and 3 games to choose from. EO III is the only one I haven't played, the first 2 were very enjoyable, but for me, Dark Spire has the "it" factor for my preference of gaming. The game strictly follows combat rules from Advanced D&D, and it's as close (on the DS) to having a self guided 60+ hour D&D session. Old school graphics and sound (although you can upgrade from 8 bit sound and wire frame graphics), and a great sense of foreboding. I just might have to pop this game in today~
