scar the 1Posted 11/5/2011 3:44:25 AM | OK, so I love platformers. They are the best. I can't really seem to find much on the DS to appease my craving, though. Let's jot down what I've already tried, and what I think of them, so you know what to recommend:
Castlevania: Dawn of Souls It's nice, not heavily platformer enough, though. I mean I really enjoy some of the intense passages, but it is more hack'n'slashing and exploring than platforming. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin Same thing here. Both are good games, but not what I'm looking for. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia This has better platforming elements, and it's more difficult, which I like. I personally think it's one of the tightest games on the console, but again, I'm looking for something more "purely" platformer. Mega Man Zero Collection Really tight platformers. I dig these a lot. Biggest complaints are that they are too story-driven and a bit too action-heavy (the first one also has a ridiculous way to handle death and game overs, I can't remember if the others do as well). Solid, but I'd prefer more platformer, less shooting. Great level of difficulty, though. Mega Man ZX games Like Mega Man Zero games but worse. Meh. New Super Mario Bros This is what I'm looking for. Except that the level design is atrocious and difficulty is laughable. But it's "pure". N+ This is a good game. Sort of what I'm looking for, but I'm after something a bit more traditional.
These are platformers I love on other consoles (that also describe somewhat what I'm looking for): Castlevania 3 (NES) Good level design, hard, some replay value as well. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) Not extremely hard, but genious level design, and nice length. Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 (NES) Super hard, nice gameplay mechanics. Mega Man 9 and 10 (PSN, XBOXLIVE, WiiWare) So. Tight. Level design. These games are, basically, Mega Man done right IMO. Old school platforming with the benefit of hindsight. Love them. Super Meat Boy (PC, XBOX) Incredibly tight platformer with a nice, high pace.
So there might be more, but this is some basic guidelines. Now, I'm not really familiar with the DS library, so I figured I could ask you guys. Is there any platformer magic on the DS, or is it all about RPGs? --- Never mind :( |
MereMarePosted 11/5/2011 6:40:18 AM | Kirby Mass Attack Legend of Starfy --- Zelda is an ACTION-ADVENTURE, not an RPG!!! |
Dragovian1Posted 11/5/2011 6:53:37 AM | Kirby Super Star Ultra (challenging to get perfect on everything and it has an overall nice collection of things to do) Legendary Starfy (fairly easy with a story, and alot of unlockables) Monster Tale (easy with a story and you get to raise a monster to help you in battle)
Side Note: If you own a Wii, GC, PS2, XBox (may work on 360 as well), then you may want to look into the Mega Man Anniversary Collection, which has Mega Man 1-8 and 2 others not released in the US, so 10 in all.
If you own a PSP, then I highly recommend the Mega Man Dual Pack. It has Mega Man Powered Up (Mega Man 1 with updated graphics and a challenge mode with 10 challenges for Mega Man and each Boss...it's quite difficult) and it has Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (nice graphics and more abilities to use, plus you get to play as another character after you beat the game...very fun and decently challenging, which can be more so challenging if you don't get the add-ons for Mega Man). --- http://www.amazon.com/shops/A258UKMK08DSV0 Playing: DS- Yu-Gi-Oh WC 2011, DQ Monsters: Joker 2 / Wii- Mario Kart Wii, Gold's Gym: Cardio Workout |

culture_denPosted 11/5/2011 8:12:28 AM | Super Mario 64 DS :P ?
Hmm wish I could help but my go-to game for platformers is Super Mario World gba, the greatest game of all time. So I was never too worried about what the DS had to offer.
Then there's Yoshi's Island gba, the second greatest game of all time. This game is just spectacular.
I don't even know if I should recommend Yoshi's Island DS to you because you really should play the first game more. But at the same time you may end up disliking Yoshi's Island DS immensely like I did after playing the simply magnificent Yoshi's Island gba.
So... it's quite a conundrum. --- When life gives you melons, you make melonade. |

scar the 1 (Topic Creator) Posted 11/5/2011 10:18:54 PM | I'll check Shantae and Monster Tale, haven't heard of those, thanks. Kirby is fun and all, but it doesn't fill my platformer hunger in the slightest. --- Never mind :( |
VirtuKnightPosted 11/5/2011 10:42:29 PM | Check out Henry Hatsworth before Monster Tale. Hatsworth seems to be more of what you're looking for. --- Dear Mr. Thoughtless, there's things you shouldn't say, For the judge can hear you and it soon will be the day. |
