I believe this game was only on the SNES Mario compilation game with SMB1-3 plus
Lost Levels. Why wasn't this remade on the GBA or the DS? It was a very tough game
but still fun. It seems to have been forgotten.

In Japan it was released as "Super Mario Bros 2" for the Famicom/NES. A follow up under the "Lost Levels" title just wouldn't make sense with that consideration.

Yes, but he meant to say SMB2 is its original Japanese name. Long before other regions ever saw it. They don't use the term Lost Levels in Japan.

The way I see it, it wasn't remade/re-released on the GBA/DS because of the same reason the original SMB wasn't...it already had it's handheld incarnation w/ SMB DX for the GBC...that game included both the original SMB/LL...and why the first SMBA was Mario 2/USA.

The original SMB was remade for the DS. So the only one left is LL or SMB2/Japan.
I had forgotten it was ported to the GB. It still seems like the forgotten game though.
I liked it on the Mario All Stars game - I thought of it as the expert level SMB game.

Because it royally stunk, and the US clearly got the better SMB2 back in the day.

And I'm not griping about the high difficulty, I just really think it failed miserably to improve upon the original in terms of innovation. SMB3 did a far better job as a sequel in terms of taking what made SMB great and greatly expanding on it, and SMB2, while a reskinned version of a different game, was fun and had lots of additions and gameplay features that made it a fun, fresh new challenge. Lost Levels was basically just Worlds 9-20 of SMB1 and failed to impress me in any way whatsoever as a sequel.

NSMB isn't a remake of the original.
The Lost Levels were in a game on the GBC called Super Mario Bros Deluxe.

Um... stop sucking at the game then?

No one was talking about NSMB.

Only partially, but yeah.
