Pretty much every Super Mario game with an overworld does this.

I can somewhat understand it on a console, but on a portable you should be able to at least quicksave.

Being capable of tolerating a crappy design decision doesn't mean it wasn't a crappy design decision. There is no GOOD reason not to be able to save after every level. In a lot of portable games your progress is constantly saved any time you're doing anything, and I'm talking about games like Puzzle Quest which have to keep track of a lot more than just which levels you've beaten. NSMB literally only has to track a few simple statistics plus the levels you've beaten and your spot on the map, and it COULD do that every level but it chooses not to. Why would you defend such a stupid choice?

Unless you're playing somewhere where you can't do this. That was a poor design choice.

It just boggles my mind how many games either lack simple features like button-mapping or do stupid things like limiting when you can save when there's no reason for it (meaning, not in a Survival Horror game). The game is still playable but it's stupid regardless.

^ This.

*suddenly notices that the TC is the one who posted this*

...wait, so you're mad at a game that you admit uses the exact same save system as "pretty much every Super Mario game with an overworld?"

Ooooo-kay. Did you return all of them as well?

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of reasons to return New Super Mario Bros; but I never considered the save system to be one of them. That said, NSMB is still a better game than New Super Mario Bros Wii, which basically is devoid of fun unless you have three friends willing to come over and play with you any time you want to play the game.

I would think that 20 years would make nintendo evolve in the game design department. I'm obviously wrong. Just because previous games in the series had the same shortcomings doesn't mean a newer one should have too.
