XXX (NPC) is unconscious

I was in the middle of doing a quest for the Mage Guild, when I accidentally pickpocketed from the person I was meant to escort to a Mage Guild. I didn't realise at the time, and my save files were saved after doing this. End result, I have an NPC following me around constantly until I complete the task needed to be re-accepted into the guild. I've had him become unconscious many times since then, and just wondered can he actually die at some point and ruin the quest involving him? And does this apply to other NPCs that may become unconscious/die?

No, if an NPC goes unconscious, they are invulnerable, no matter how many times they get knocked out. However, some NPCs lose their invulnerability after certain quests are done. After that, they become just another unessential NPC, with no special regeneration abilities. If you want the full list, here's a link:

if this person is a essential NPC he is invincible and simply become unconscious when He/She runs out of health.

How to tell if He/She is essential:
while looking at the npc an icon appears on your cursor (first person mode only i think) if the icon is a crown that npc is considered essential/important to a quest and cannot die

Thanks for the info. I already knew about the crown indicator for important NPCs. I'm just glad to now know they can't die. In that case, I'm actually at an advantage since this NPC following seems to be a bit nifty with spells!

I don't get what the two previous messages are getting at. I feel it must be some sexual innuendo related to the XXX...

Anyway, since my initial problem with this NPC, he ran off VERY quickly when we were attacked by a couple of bears. I have no idea where he ended up. Will he eventually magically find me at some point and/or will he appear as a red/green marker on my map when I can finally complete his related quest?

If you sit and wait for a day or two, he should eventually find you if he's not stuck. I can't remember, but he may appear as a quest marker once you get back into the Mages Guild.
