Does filing a complaint even do anything?

I heard Bill Gates gets a nickel every time that happens.

Bill Gates retired from Microsoft a couple of years ago.

An enforcement rep will look at the complaint (and see everyone who reported the same complaint, when, if they were playing with you/if you sent them a message, and if they are friends with each other) and decide if they need to/can take action. If it was rude in-game voice then an enforcement agent may join you while you are playing to see if you are being rude in game, or if you sent a message to other players usiing the messaging system they will check that. If you are found to be in violation of the code of conduct then you'll get suspended, otherwise you won't.

Simple, no?

Verbal argument- no. They rarely ban/suspend anyone from voice-chat, unless it is also expressed in your bio or motto. You can trash talk all you want, just keep it out of your profile (motto/bio/Gt).

Filing complaint does work on players who are tampering or modding the system. The most common form of communications that can put you in danger are messages that offer mods or sales of services to other players.

I'm just concerned because in the past I have played street fighter and some guy was trash talking me the entire time and when I beat him twice in a row he booted me. The entire time I didn't talk trash back. The next day I sign in on xbox live and I get a week suspension. Can someone explain that? When I finally was able to play I noticed my name, location and bio said code of conduct. I'm guessing he reported my profile as offensive but it seems like microsoft didn't bother to check and just suspended automatically because there was nothing offensive in my profile whatsoever. I put my name and my location and my bio had a description of myself but there weren't any curse words or anything remotely offensive. I hope this doesn't happen again and microsoft actually checks before suspending people. This false complaint thing could be getting out of hand.

Microsoft DOES check the profile - if it said "Code of Conduct", there was something in there against the Terms of Use.

What was in your profile before the suspension?

Usually profanity, advertisement or offensive remarks will get you a suspension. It is very unlikely that you were suspended for trash talking. Their policy enforcement team does check on this, and they have evidence.

Link explains the process the best, and Winternova is correct as well, the TOS is a lot more strict than most people think it is, you almost definitely violated it.

In the future, if you feel like you've been wrongly banned you can post a topic here:

http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/41.aspx

if they're wrong, they'll overturn it. I've seen that happen exactly 3 times in a few years.
